Miyamoto: E3 is no longer a showcase for the hardcore crowd.

I think that there?s probably one other element to it, and that?s that our view of how we use E3 has changed. For a very long time, E3 was an event where ? and certainly Nintendo included ? catered specifically to the core gamer. Now we look at more ? an opportunity for us to introduce new concepts and new types of play that we intend to bring to the broader audience, particularly because of the media that gathers at E3 now.

So while attending an E3 event like this, they might be given the impression that Nintendo is no longer focusing on the games that appeal to the core gamer, in fact we?re still working on many of those titles, but it?s just not the type of event where we?ll be showcasing that anymore.

More proof that the casual appeal is replacing the hardcore in the Nintendo house that it's now seeping into the hardcore's favorite trade show? Also, anyone think that Nintendo's decision here is going to influence Sony and MS in next years E3 showing? If I had to guess I might think that Sony would be the least effected by this influence, but MS has Wii-envy so bad I think it's possible--but who knows for sure.

Anyway, I guess we'll have to wait for another event to see our games--Nintendo has given the hardcore a boot. :brokenheart:

E3 isn't the hardcore gamer, PAX or something else is. E3 lost that title when they bombed several years ago. And on top of that, the "hardcore gamer" (which is really just the casual gamer of old, god knows what we call actual hardcore gamers these days besides losers), can go to sites like Gametrailers and Nintendo should be showcasing their stuff at sites like that more often. However I am not sure if they are following through on that end of it since I tend to fall off the hype bandwagon from time to time.

Oh and in case anyone isn't up with todays lingo.

casual gamer: your mom
hardcore gamer: casual gamer
real hardcore gamer: we don't talk about these people anymore.

these e3 showcases are all about showing off the latest fads and gimmicks... for casual crowds.

hardcore players will go online and find all the hardcore game info they seek and get there info from small underground websites as opposed to shows where strippers dress up as anime characters and dance.

I'd say most people here fall into the category of "game connoisseur."

Also, Nintendo certainly seems to love talking this kind of BS. I mean, Christ, they get one successful product and all of a sudden they're the ultimate authority on everything gaming.

One successful product? Are you daft? Ignoring the history of the NES, SNES and GameBoy, Nintendo currently has the top console (Wii) and handheld (DS). Nintendo singlehandedly saved gaming from the crash of 1984, they are responsible for some of the most iconic video game characters in history (Mario, Link, Samus, Donkey Kong), and between all their systems, they have sold more consoles and handhelds than any other company (not to mention they're the longest running console and handheld manufacturer still in business). And hell, virtually all of Nintendo's successes get traced back to Shigeru Miyamoto. So what in God's name makes you think that he, or Nintendo, is unqualified to make a statement like this?

Okay, two successful, recent products. They were on the skids until a few years ago.

especially in the console market (not handhelds). the N64 and the GC were pretty much considered crap systems, even though they had some great games on them.

Well of course E3 is no longer a showcase for the hardcore crowd. That's because they banned the public from E3 after the 2006 show. So no more fanboys roaming the halls. Just bloggers and 'journalists'.

Yeah, Miyamoto is completely right on this. It's not just E3 either. Gaming in general is going very mainstream. E3 simply reflects how the industry is going. Something like TGS is for more hardcore gamers.

Look at the reduction in studios showing up at E3 compared to previous years and you can see this quickly heading down to nothing but a couple press conferences force feed of what they want to say from the big boys and a smattering of demos.

Judging by the universal negative response to Nintendo's press conference by not only by the public watching from the outside, but just about every blogger and journalist at the event, I'd have to say Shiggy really has no idea what he's talking about here in relation to E3. Nintendo just decided "hey, whatever... we'll just showcase our brilliant ideas and because the Wii prints money, and we can do no wrong." Yes, anyone and their mom cannot get in anymore, but that doesn't mean that the ONLY thing that should be shown is casual titles.

As for Nintendo being successful, the Gamecube struggled throughout its lifespan, particularly because no third party developers really wanted to do anything with it... the N64 decided to continue cartridge based while the PS came out and went disc based which was also considered a bad decision. Luckily their handheld market kept them alive.

If by hardcore gamer means you devote your entire freetime sitting hunched over with both of your hands in the controller form staring at the screen and just about playing 4th or 5th generations of genres in its 5th or 6th visual facelift....

I personally laugh at the term hardcore gamer, casual gamer, etc. Games arent meant to be a sole part of life as what the so called "hardcore" term implies. It is meant as a form of entertainment. E3 is to show what is new in entertainment and as a means of appeal. What is made by the statement by Miyamoto is that it is no longer just the "hardcore" gamer. Showings must appeal to those who don't want to waste their life away gripping a controller, only picking it up for some fun for a bit as well.

Agreed. As much as their showings is ok.... I would personally like to see more of the enjoyable single player games of their other IPs. But they are probably not at the 40% completion range yet....

what?!? The GC did 'well.'

I still think that the GC was leaps and bounds superior to the PS2 even though 3rd party dev's skipped out on making a lot of of good games. The system was way more powerful than the ps2 just like the xbox was more powerful than both systems combined.

But it didn't matter, the ps2 still beat both systems combined...x5, so Nintendo took Sony's idea and decided to make a weak system that's easy and cheap to develope games for and released it at the perfect time.. that is one reason they struck gold with the wii.

If the wii had 360 graphics, issues and complexity, it wouldn't garner nearly as much attention from from grandma or parents looking to buy their kids a present.

Nintendo never had any competition on the handheld market so that was always gold for them.
