Mixing SCSI-2 with SCSI-3?

Hi,

I own an Adaptec 2940U/UW SCSI Card and I have my CD-Writer and my DVD-ROM plugged to it (both are SCSI-2). I was wondering what would happen if I was to replace one of my drive with a SCSI-3 one? One will work, not the other? Both won't work? The faster will work at the speed of the slowest?

Thank you for the information.

Does your 2940 have both 50- and 68-pin internal connectors? If so, putting the SCSI-3 HD on the 68-pin chain will allow all to operate at their proper speeds. If you only have the
50-pin connector, (a) you'll need a 68-to 50-pin adapter and (b) the SCSI-3 HD will run at SCSI-2 speed (20 instead of 40).

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I have both connectors, but I was told I couldn't use them at the same time... Is that right?
BTW, I only have CD-Drives on my SCSI Card.

Thank you,
Bye

Well you can't use all 3 (including the external connector) at once, unless you have a 2940UW Pro.
Put the SCSI-3 HD (UW) on the 68-pin connector, run your CD-drives on the 50-pin chain. Everything should work at its top speed.
