Mixing RAM timings and speeds

Hello all,

I was wondering if mixing RAM timings and RAM speeds will greatly effect the system? If so, how?

I bought a Corsair xms series 1GB (2x) DDR2 800 that is on my current system. But I plan to upgrade to a new motherboard that needs DDR2 1066. Its frontside bus is 1,600 Mhz higher than my current motherboard. Will this be a good idea? Or will my old ram sticks will be no use?

I also plan to overclock once I get a new motherboard as well. Thanks for all the help I can get.

What motherboard did you buy?

Also, as a general rule, mixing and matching memory is not recommended. More often than not it works but, if it does not you are stuck with 2 memory kits you cannot use together. And, the only way to know for sure is to install and test.

No motherboard requires a certain speed of RAM. They only require types of RAM, as in DDR, DDR2, or DDR3. I'm not sure who told you that that motherboard requires PC1066, but they were wrong. Dead wrong. It will run just fine with PC2-3200 RAM, that they haven't made in many years now, just like every other DDR2 motherboard will.

I bought MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum (new), I have 2 sticks (1GB DDR2 800) of Corsair ram that runs its timing of 4-4-4-12, in my current system (look at signature below).

My intent was to:

#1 Buy a new mobo MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum
#2 Add in 4GB + the 2 GB (the ones I have now)
#3 I want to overclock my AMD 64 X2 4000+

Will this be possible?

Yes, the bios will set the timings to the looser @ 5-5-5-18. If not manually set them to that and to the default of 1.9v and all will be just fine. I have done this and it works without a glitch.
