Mixing PC2100 & PC2700 DDR Ram

Currently I have two sticks of PC2100, both are 128MB. The motherboard supports up to PC2700, so could I add a stick of 2700 with these? Does that then drop the speed of it to function on the same level as the 2100?

I want to purchase another 512MB, whether it is 1x 512 or 2x 256. If I want the best performance, should I replace the old RAM and use only PC2700 or use them both and have the extra 256MB?
