Mixing GPU video output

Total noob question... Is there any downside to mixing video output? For example, my main desktop's GTX760 feeds my two monitors via HDMI and DVI. I don't need sound, so that's not an issue.

My GTX970 has 3 DP plugs, but only 1ea HDMI and DVI, so it would seem DP is the output of choice... but none of my monitors have DP.

Does it matter? Is there one output that's just all the way better than another? I always kind of figured HDMI would wind up as the generic 'standard' video input, but that hasn't happened. What am I missing? I'm talking generic, general use video (office, browsing, video, gaming.)

MODS: I meant to put this in VC&G, not NVidia...
