I'm bored so I'll share (prepare to join me... zzzzz)

So I have a friend I email every now and then, and recently we began a conversation on philosophy. I don't know a lot on the subject, but I have opinions and I am fairly logical. I also like to play devils advocate and point out all the faults or unanswered questions that arise when topics like philosophy, politics, etc are discussed.

So the reply from this girl is:

"*sigh*

If I had known that you simply wanted to argue with
someone I wouldn't have bothered. Yes, I concede that
this person may be absolutely correct. Yes, you're
getting "my opinions," my views.

If you are depressed get help, don't take it out on
me. If you want to feel like you won something,
please I hand you the trophy."

WTF!!!

I hate it when people start getting personal or letting their emotions into what should be a rational conversation.

I should post my response.... these emails are like essays (pages each). I admitted to her that I get a little annoying because I like to be argumentative (in a logical way) when having such conversations (and I apologized about that). My girlfriend calls it my jackass superiority syndrome or some such thing... I have to be told to stop sometimes... but still, we're having a conversation, stop whining like a sissy girl and defend your POV, and be logical about it or I'm going to call you on it... Jeesh!

As far as button pushing, if you're having a logical conversation, I would respond in a way that I would expect to be responded to, with good solid questions and perspectives.... Not my fault if people don't like being questioned. Besides, I only do it with my friends and only when a conversation calls for it.... am I supposed to agree with every blatant assumption someone makes when we're having a conversation that requires a certain amount of rationale?? If so, let's change the damn subject because I don't like listening to peoples unfounded opinions, etc.

Nothing wrong with email dialectic. But as soon as she puts the emotion in, if you're being a-emotional, it's going to go downhill immediately.

Yeah, but I was a logical ass participating in what I thought was a logical conversation.

Thanks for the cliffs though... I should put them in the top.

some ppl cannot understand differing opinions. they think that if you dont believe the same as them, you are attacking them and they get all defensive.

haha confirmed. no matter how logical you are, if youre just playing devils advocate for a rise, then thats being an asshole. hell, even you admit your gf has to reign your annoying ass in sometimes. and when talking philosophy, isnt that opinions and viewpoints anyway? so why would someone so logical and rational as you have a problem with that and get all huffy and want to change the subject? unfounded opinions indeed.

True, I admit philosophy is all founded on opinions. I guess in this instance I should clarify that over the course of our conversation I laid everything out in a logical fashion, but admitted that my perception was as much based on opinion as theirs. I thought I was being intelligent and asking questions for the sake of hearing their intelligent response and counter questions... that's really the onlything you can do when discussing something like philosophy... otherwise what's the point.

And my comment about unfounded was just a generalized statement about how people will often make statement without qualifying them (of which I, like everyone else, am guilty).

Points bolded above for clarity.....
It seems as if you're showing a great deal of emotion over your friend's show of emotion against your "Devil's Advocasy."
When you're discussing something you don't know a lot about, and "playing devil's advocate", you're really just being an immature jerk, either by pushing buttons or inciting conflict.
For you to say "I'm fairly logical" is illogical.</spock> Furthermore, to think YOU are pointing out ALL the "unanswered questions is arrogant as well. This is the hallmark of a BLOWHARD.
As Humans, we are emotional beings. This disassociation of our emotions is what gets us into trouble. Philosophy requires a sense of empathy and understanding of "the human condition" in order to BE.
Then capping it off by being all butt hurt because your friend calls you on your BS really shows your true colors or stripes, whichever way you want to take it.

Either way, your emotions and illogic have shown your true self.

Welcome to ATOT, your local BS Detection and Dispersal Facility.

When talking to women, try to be nice and sensitive. Don't be a jackass and speak like a man, not bastard who likes to see people get frustrated. One of these days, your girl is gonna leave you for someone nicer.
