Mixing ECC with non ECC RAM, will it work???

Can you mix ECC with non-ECC RAM? Reason I'm asking is...my wife's work threw out a lot of their old PC's. Me, being the garbage muncher that I am, took all their stuff from the trash and managed to peice together a good PII400 system, + about 50 bucks for the extra's. The RAM I grabbed was from their stripped down server, only had 128MB of ECC left in it. It posts just fine when I boot up to Linux. I was looking last night at upgrading it with more RAM, but i remembered that it was an ECC stick, hence my question.....
