mixing ECC and nonECC ram

Just got one of those Dell Poweredge barebones. Comes with 128MB 400MHz DDR ECC ram. I figured I'd go find cheaper ram online than use Dell's upgrade options. So anyway, can I put in 400MHz DDR non-ECC ram without destabilizing the system much? What about mixing latency of 2.5 and 3 together? I don't know that much about ram. Could I even push it and buy 333Mhz or 300Mhz ram non-ECC and mix it with the 400MHz without much harm?
