Mix drives for raid?

can i mix different drive types for a raid 0 or 1?

id like to buy the new segate perpendicular 7200.10 320gig to mix with my WD3200ks i have now, and then have another drive as my os...i think the 150gig raptor out now.

Yes.

If they are different sizes, you'll usually be limited to the size of the smaller one (though sometimes you can use the 'extra' space as a non-RAID partition -- it depends on the controller).

If they perform differently (like a 5400RPM and 7200RPM drive together), the slower one will drag down the performance of the array.

Im running a raid 5 server using 4 500GB Seagate ST3500641AS drives (7200.9 sata300)

I need another drive, and Newegg has an awesome deal going for a 500gb Seagate ST3500630AS (7200.10 sata300). Link

They are a slightly different model (7200.9 vs 7200.10) and the newer one has perpindicular recording.

Should I expect any problems or smooth sailing?

It doesn't matter. They can be different versions, models, speeds, cache levels, brands, interfaces (if you use software RAID or use adapters), or sizes (although if you are adding to an array, the new drive has to be at least as big as the existing ones).

I thought the 'silly grin' smiley was enough to indicate I wasn't actually upset. But this is literally the third thread int he last two days asking about whether you can mix brands of drives in a RAID array.

I'd go outside and play, but it's 11:30PM, cold, and pouring rain outside. It's been raining for two days straight.
