Mix DDR400 with PC2100?

Corsair CMX512-3200C2

Hi,

Last year I built my brother a system with the EPOX EP-8KHA+ with 512MB of PC2100 from Crucial. I want to add another 512MB of RAM and was wondering if I could use DDR400 this time. Specifically, a stick of Corsair CMX512-3200C2. The reason I want to do this is so he'll be one step closer to the next mobo upgrade.

I've worked with older systems before that had PC66 or PC100 and added PC133 and never had a problem with the blend.

By the way..this is a business system and not a play system. It's uses range from word processing to 3D graphics design and video editing. So, it must be stable as a rock. Running Win2000.

Thanks,
RockDog

Yes, you can. It will just run at PC2100 instead of PC3200 speeds.

HOWEVER!!! If you mix RAM from different vendors, there is always a chance it may not work as stable as before. But there's not a whole lot of telling before you try it out.
It's a lot better these days than it used to be, but there still may be compatibility problems.

Thank you RSMemphis. That's just what I wanted to hear. Have you tried it yourself or know anyone who has?

I know that when I installed the Corsair CMX512-3200C2 in a MSI KT4-Ultra with an XP2200+, the RAM defaulted to 333MHz. Is it supposed to do that?

Would anyone else like to elaborate on the subject? All comments are welcome. Good idea? Bad idea? Would you do it?

Thanks,
RockDog

Only what's been said before - the RAM will run at the speed of the slowest stick. The system's really only as good as its weakest component.

It's Never a good idea to mix memory of any kind/shape or form.

Whether or not it is a bad idea, I'm not inclined to say... I'll remain silent on that.

However, I strongly "recommend" against it.

I've mixed it all the time and never had a single problem.
