Mitusmi FDD Trouble

I have a new oem mitsumi fdd installed in the comp that is my sig. When I load a floppy into the drive and try to access it the computer says the disk is not formatted, "would i like to format it". I now the disk is formated becasue I put files on it at work. Both machines are running XP.

I have tried installing the drive and letting microsoft provide the drivers.
I have tried uninstalling the drive clearing the cmos after a biosflash and installing the drive with the correct drivers from Mitsumi.
I have checked that the cables are connected properly.
The built in card reader is recognized.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Did you try another disk, or even a disk from another batch? I've had groups of disks go bad, before. It can happen if you disks get close to a magnetic source. Even sitting on top of your TV or stereo for awhile could do it.

Yeah, I did try two different batches stored in different places, but thanks for the thought.

Try another drive. I've also had drives "appear" to be ok and recognized by the system, but not work when it gets down to doing the deed.

Good luck. 🙂

I know you said you checked that the cables are oriented properly, but I'd try flipping the direction of the cable going into the drive. If that fails, try the same with the cable going into the motherboard.
I have the same Mitsumi media reader/floppy drive and had the same problem.

If the data cable is on backwards, the LED will stay always lit when you power up the machine. For reference, when you connect the data cable, the red stripe should be towards the middle of the drive. Since the media reader works (which is connected through USB) but the floppy doesn't, it seems likely that the cable is indeed on wrong. If the cable is on correctly, is the power connected correctly? (does the LED come on briefly during POST?).
One last thing to check, IS the floppy drive set to 1.44MB in BIOS, not 2.44MB or something silly like that? Other wise check a couple more disks. Maybe format one and see if it works on that one. The azimuth may be off on the one at work, maybe your new one at home is fine.

Indeed, I've seen a lot of bad, brand-new floppy drives. I think you have a dud after you eliminate Green Man's ideas.

Thanks everyone. When I get a chance I'll try it all. Anybody know what to do if it's a dud? I purchased it as an oem from Zip Zoom Fly.

Thanks Again
