Good, with the licensing fees earned by sesame street merchandise... the program should not need government subsidies.

Somehow I don't think adults who identify with Big Bird were ever going to be Romney voters . . . Glad to hear there are slutty Big Bird costumes though; I'd hate for Romney to ruin Halloween.

When SS catches up with oil companies, I'll agree with you

when you cant something tiny like SS then how can you expect to cut oil companies?

heck SS would make its on its own, with or without government cash.

Romney's point proven. Big Bird and the Boys do not need the cash now lets get on the the next cut. Lets cut spending in a responsible way on programs that do not have proven results or are just a waste of money. Every dollar saved is 0ne less dollar borrowed.

So using your argument the oil companies would fold without government subsidies.

Which one again would have the biggest bang in deficit savings?

wrong.

using my argument big oil subsidies would end too.

I applaud your consistancy.

If Romney really is interested in budget savings why did he single out something that takes up 200-300 million as opposed to something that takes up 4 billion.

Taking taxpayer money and sending it to Sesame Street is not exactly the same thing as allowing tax exemptions for things like farm fuel and purchasing oil for strategic reserves. Another oil company subsidy is the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Which Republicans tried to cut and Democrats called the act "and extreme idea."

So as far as oil companies go... remove the three of the largest subsidies above and they would probably still survive. Will the U.S. then buy as much oil for the strategic reserves? Farms will likely use just as much fuel. And less fortunate people will have to pay more and likely would not purchase as much... meaning tax revenue may be neutral.

Whether oil subsidies should exist should really be in it's own thread. but again, Stopping the money flow to a revenue producing organization like Sesame Street saves tax payer money. Reducing/removing subsidies on big oil is a whole other dynamic.

Why does PBS need tax money? Shouldn't it live or die based on its own merits (which means donations from people and companies)?

because it highlights the fact that goverment right now is unwilling to cut anything.

ie death by a thosand cuts. or Watch your pennies and your dollars will take care of themselves.

there are too many subsides for too many things. And once given out they seem to never end.

It doesn't need nor take government subsidies, to be frank. The public subsidies just go to making sure people in rural areas can actually view public broadcasting through the CPB.

The irony is that cutting federal subsidies (which are mostly paid by the blue urban areas) will only "kill" Big Bird in rural areas, which happen to be typically "red". He'll still be alive and well in urban areas.
