It's not really that weird. What is weird for Romney is he's carrying around bills smaller than $100.

It is extremely weird IMO. Have you ever heard of a celebrity of any sort just giving cash to people who show up at an event? Also, it might attract other people to beg money from him.

He's done this before, with a kid, and didn't have anything smaller than a $100 at the time, hence my comment, and why he's apparently learned to carry smaller bills.

unless you're like the President, who probably hasn't seen a bank since election day, I always assumed that millionaires got their walking around money from ATM's too (or, rather, have their secretaries/assistants go to the ATM for them)... I feel like the only place where I've seen money withdrawn in hundred dollar bills is either from a bank window or a casino.

or am I just hopelessly out of touch with where the 1% gets their cash from?

I told you he's a wealth redistributionist.

Also, it might attract other people to beg money from him.

Isn't that the entire function of government? Romney simply played out a mini characterization of what Obama has been doing, and what both he and Romney would continue to do as President.

I am not sure he should be doing this...it appears he is buying votes. I know that is not his purpose (since he only has done it twice now), but it is a slippery slope upon which to tread.

It is a little strange but there's more to it than she just showed up at an event. She met him for the first time and has since been volunteering at his Columbia campaign headquarters cleaning and cooking collard greens for them. He recognized her at a later event and probably heard she was volunteering and still didn't have a job so he gave her some money to get by on.

CNN has an interesting spin.

The cash gift is notable from a candidate who has said he would not give away "free stuff" as president but rather would focus on cutting back on federal spending and stimulating private sector growth.

"I know there are some people who run for president that will say, 'Hey, I'm going to give you more. I'll find a way to give you some more. I'll change the rules and give you more money," Romney said at a December event in Conway, New Hampshire. "I'm not that guy. If there's a competition for who will give you the most free stuff, go vote for that guy."

This is definitely the WEIRDEST thing I've ever heard a candidate doing.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_...ney-gives-cash-to-jobless-campaign-volunteer/

She's 55, black, worked as a house cleaner, now is unemployed. She was at a campaign event and Romney actually handed her like $60.

He also paid her electric bill.

First paying people to post and now paying for votes, interesting new Republican strategy to get votes but I am not surprised.

How long before the right wing media attack her as "looking for a handout"?

I didn't think the Dana Bush aka slow news day thread would be surpassed so quickly.

If you want to be jaded about this, I would think the most likely scenario is that this was staged (not that I do think this is the case, just sayin). Would show some compassion to the unemployed to soften the Bain issue. Also has a black women volunteering for him.

And BTW McPwned, how is he buying her vote when she is already volunteering for his campaign? Tell me if this situation had occurred during Obama's campaign that you would still feel like he was buying a vote?

Ah, that is different, that is fine. No problem with that/

Yeah, CNN has trouble understanding the difference between using the public's money and using your own private money.

Personal charity =/= government handouts, no matter how hard some will try to draw the parallel. Cheesy campaign ploy? Perhaps. But that's about it.

Isn't that illegal?

If you are talking about Balsamic Vinegar, you can still guy it without photo ID.

If you are talking about giving money to supporters, you have to be careful how you do it. If you give to a lot of people, you will most likely be taken up on charges. Give to one or two people who you know are very needy and are also volunteers in something, no problem.

All in all, it is best to not give directly to a person, but rather though a group such as the Salvation Army, etc. That way the candidate can avoid the appearence of doing something wrong.

Strange that the anti-religion types are not in here bashing the poor little old lady for talking about god and how he told her to go see Romney.

"I was on the highway praying and said God tell me how to get [my house] lights on, and I pulled up to a stop sign and his bus was there," she said.

Williams said she followed the bus to the airport "because the Lord told me. It sounds strange but he really did. I mean God really talked to me about this."

If I was speaking as a fat white christian male afraid of change and being honest about Romney I'd say "I'll never vote for a Mormon. Black people are still people but Mormons are satanic."

How about he give her a job instead? Wouldn't that make for much better PR? She's working him for free still. I think we have a word for that.

Or he could at least provide her room and board in exchange for her work. That sounds like a good system.
