Former Florida governor Jeb Bush, widely viewed as the new favorite of establishment Republicans, called Romney a "patriot" in a statement after news of the decision broke.

"Though I'm sure today's decision was not easy, I know that Mitt Romney will never stop advocating for renewing America's promise through upward mobility, encouraging free enterprise and strengthening our national defense," Bush said. "Mitt is a patriot and I join many in hoping his days of serving our nation and our party are not over."

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of future Romney jokes suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced....

Too bad... if you like political humor... better for Governor Bush's chances though.

Good. I'm sure he's a good guy and all but he's not someone I want in the White House.

Maybe Jeb will put him in charge of PBS just for lulz :awe:

interesting analysis.

Now, with Romney out, the dynamic of the race will be fundamentally altered. The choice is now likely be generational in nature. Bush, at 61, will be nearly a decade older than any of his serious competition in the race. (Christie and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul are both 52.) And, he will be almost 20 years older than people such as Rubio, 43, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, 44. (To be clear: The age difference won’t be the only issue at play now in the Republican primary. But it will absolutely take on greater significance with Romney not only out but also highlighting it in his decision not to run.)

The generational question will be even more important because of the increasing likelihood that Hillary Clinton will not be seriously challenged for the Democratic nomination. At 67, Clinton would be among the oldest people — in either party — to win a presidential nomination. And Romney — and lots of other Republicans — clearly feel as though the best (only?) way to beat Clinton is to nominate a fresh-faced Republican who can paint Clinton as a figure of a past that is better forgotten.

Call it the Reverse Obama: A key to then-Sen. Barack Obama’s message in 2008 was that he wasn’t part of the old way of doing things. His age — and relative newness to the national political landscape — helped affirm that message and was critical to his toppling of Clinton in the primary and his sound defeat of John McCain — age 72 at the time — in the general election.

That age contrast — both in a primary and a general election — seems to be what Romney really wants. How much of that is about his personal distaste for Bush and how much is genuinely tied into a belief that it’s time for the party to move on is very, very difficult to know. But regardless of his motivation, Mitt Romney is going to get the primary race he wanted in 2016. All it took was for him to decide not to run.

Romney figured out he has enough money and does not need to run for president so he can squeeze a couple more dollars out of American taxpayers so he can stuff his own pockets.

I personally thought Romney would have been a good leader and a decent centrist President. But 2 prior failed bids is a lot to overcome...few want to bet on that horse.

He even bowed out like a CEO. Romney said he is convinced he would win but has chosen not to run and he won't reconsider running even if he is asked (not a quote but its real close to what he said)

I give Romney crap for his rich guy stunts and attitude. He was a decent governor and I'm sure he is a good neighbor but ruthless in business. The last part is why Romney left lower offices he wants to be the guy at the top that nobody can question.

I agree that he wants to be in charge...but everything I know about him says that it's not because he doesn't want anybody to question him. It's because he thinks he can make a difference.

That's what makes him terrifying and why this is the best news I've heard all year. I don't know why Romney makes my skin crawl, but I pay attention to that kind of feeling. I have felt for ages and ages he's the most dangerous person we could possibly elect.

Is Jeb Bush really that strong a conservative? I figured that someone who rules a "battleground" state like Florida is necessarily a centrist.

I support him just because it drives the libtards insane to think that Bush might be in the White House.

Perhaps now you'll be able to sleep better at night.

Not really. I sleep as I sleep pretty much unrelated to anything. What would make me lose sleep is knowing I killed a 16 year old girl because she drove at me and only broke my leg with a car. That would be a wound, the one in my leg, that would heal.

Not getting funded by the Kochs, having people in his party who have sworn to use their power and money to prevent him from getting the nomination. Seems like a fairly easy decision to me.

16 year old girls, take note. This may be your only chance to attempt vehicular homicide against a man who's okay with that.

I would have rather had him in the White House at the time, than his idiot brother who was.

But I feel even his time has passed.
