From my understanding, you cannot combine the new lowered price with the free lamp offer. It only applies to the original $1495 price of the projector before Mitsu decided to lower the retail price to $995

Once you watch a movie on a front projector, anything less isn't worth it IMO. A 42" LCD TV is so tiny for watching movies.

Agreed 42" is way too small, thats for the kiddies or bright mid day tv watching.

Agreed. Projectors just offer a whole different experience to watching movies that's so much more like a real theater (in the good ways and not the bad)

What's the consensus on using a projector for everyday viewing? I'm thinking of replacing a 65" RPTV with the HD1000U. Any opinions?

It also can be a bit odd to watch some material on it. Watching the news on it or something is just going to be kind of goofy depending on what you're used to.

My projector is the only "TV" we have in our apartment but we really only use it to watch DVDs (shows and movies). I used to use it to watch regular TV back when we watched some but we stopped doing that a while ago.

I know some people use theirs for everyday viewing. If you're going to have it on for a lot of hours every day though, expect to run through bulbs fairly quickly. You should still get a decent amount of time out of it, but you'll rack up the hours faster of course.

Some people keep a regular TV in their room and then have a pulldown screen for when they want to use their projector for movies.

I guess it all comes down to personal preference. You'll want the room to be dark when you're watching it as krylon mentioned. It's also bad for the bulb to have on/off cycles (I've read that this can be equivalent to 2 hours of bulb life) so turning it on for like 3 mintues to catch the news on the way out the door would be a bad idea.

Ok folks, I gotta chime in here

I ordered the Mitsubishi HD1000U but not from allprojectors.com
I went with www.projector.com for a couple of reasons:

1. I told them how allprojectors.com quoted me $860 plus $30 shipping.... Steve over at www.projector.com dropped the price for me to $891 plus $28 for 2 Day Express Shipping which came out to $919 SHIPPED

2. allprojectors.com DOES NOT offer extended warranties. At www.projectors.com I was able to add to my order:

RepairMaster 3 Year Lamp Warranty $100
GE-Zurich 2yr Extended Warranty for Projectors $99.29

The bulb warranty covers 2 replacement bulbs and the projector warranty covers everything else in the projector like the dlp chip, circuitboard, psu, etc....
So for an extra $200 my projector should get me at least 2yrs of viewing w/o any issues plus a 3rd year of bulb coverage.


Overall I spent a GRAND TOTAL of $1118 for:
* Mits. HD1000U
* RepairMaster 3 Year Lamp Warranty $100
* GE-Zurich 2yr Extended Warranty for Projectors $99.29
* 2 Day Express Shipping

If you think about it, you could buy the projector from allprojectors.com for $860 shipped but 1 replacement bulb alone is at least $300 which I guarantee you will need which will bring your total purchase up to $1160 for a projector plus one bulb.

Why not spend less and get 2 extra bulbs plus 2 yrs coverage on the projector itself?
Had allprojectors.com offered extended warranties on the bulb and projector I would have gone that route, unfortunately they don't and I didn't want to keep paying for bulbs out of pocket. In the long run that bulb warranty is gonna pay for itself.

I opted not to get any extended warranties since I get 1 year from Mitsubishi and an extra year from American Express plus I get a 6-month warranty on the lamp (i.e., 90 days plus 90 days). Although it's possible that I'll get 90 days plus 1 year on the lamp. I asked a CSR at AE and she said the lamp would also get a 1 year warranty from them.

Not bad. But I would have at least purchased a lamp warranty for 3 yrs.
That would have brought your total up to $995 and you would have a projector running for 2yrs covered by Mitsubshi 1yr warranty and AE for an additional year plus the lamp would have been covered for 3 years instead of only 1yr through AE which you'll end up having to purchase anyway for around $300 sooner or later.

But hey, at least you got an HD1000U! Mine comes in tomorrow... I'm all giddy right now.
