My friend got this monitor from his work because they were getting rid of it and he gave it to me for 50 bucks. The colors look great but the monitor seems out of focus near the edges. I tried adjusting the screws on the side but it's still not as good as my NEC 1250+ in sharpness. This is a 2004 model. I heard quality control has gone down over the years. Maybe this one just inherently sucks. I'm thinking about trading my friend for his Philips Trinitron which was much sharper but not as vibrant.

And it's very bright. The black level is average I guess, not as good as my NEC. No matter how low I put the brightness it's still way to bright to tolerate in a dark room.

Yeah, many of the 2004 units suck. :( The ones from some months in particular are almost like an entirely different (crappier) monitor. I think I lucked out on mine. If you already tried adjusting both of the focus screws and it didn't help, there is not a lot more you can do.

For the black level, try doing a factory reset and see if it helps anything. One of the defective ones I got had a weird problem where the black level would become lousy over a few days, but a factory reset could temporarily fix things.

What a shame. I was expeting to be blown away by perfection but im disappointed. This is supposed to be the number 1 monitor. U-NX gun for precise focus and everything.
What does the Constant Brightness thing do? I dont get it.
Mines August 2004.

That was around the time they really started to get bad. There were a few months where they still put out good ones (mine is a June model), but they made a lot of defective ones for the rest of the year. The 2002 and 2003 ones were reportedly far more consistent.

I guess you should have inspected it first before buying it. At least you didn't have to pay much for it.

I think the constant brightness feature is supposed to adjust the brightness level to keep it the same over a long period of time. I never used it though.

Whoa. Actually a factory reset improved the sharpness alot. It's pretty good now. Theres still a little blurriness in the bottom right but overall I think it's better than my 1250+. I did inspect it before buying but my friend said that if I couldn't fix it then he would give me the other monitor if I liked it better since he got both for free. I think I will keep it for a while and see what happens.

Nice to hear that it helped. :) Make sure it stays that way over the next few weeks though. These later 2004 units can be pretty dodgy.
