Private business owners have the right to discriminate. If you don't like them then don't give them any money. The Free market will take care of the bigots.

So you are clearly stating the issue was the event and not the orientation.:colbert:

No. Since the shop owner doesn't mind selling flowers to gays, and doesn't mind selling flowers for weddings, then it's in fact a gay wedding that is clearly the problem.

Yep, do it in Mississippi ;)

See how that works.

I didn't see this edit, yea...doing anything in Mississippi that isn't within their religious bounds means you're gonna pay. Squeal like a pig boy, Jesus wants it that way!

Then clearly she wasn't discriminating based on sexual orientation :colbert:

Clearly she picks gay weddings to discriminate against. Seems hypocritical, but businesses gotta make money, so sometimes you grin and bear it, sometimes you discriminate. All in a days work for the religious minded individual.

It's rare that we agree, but this is the case. This really is how I feel, but it appears some states have laws against discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Guess all these business owners are gonna pack it in (so to speak) and head to Mississippi where they can freely discriminate however they wish. Wonder how many Muslims will end up there so they can hate on Christians?

I know of some religions that have some pretty far out beliefs, typically those against such beliefs have said we should turn the area they inhabit the most into glass. I wonder if they sentiment holds for those who are religious but are closer to home?

It's nice to see we can agree even though you're a liberal.

The states who have laws against this aren't making it better. People could be giving money to a business who are against them and they are giving their hard earned money to people who are racists and oppose them. This sounds wrong to me and is the government helping the racists.

I doubt many business owners will go to Mississippi. Most business owners aren't racist. They want to make money and won't do something stupid like this which will result in them losing money. They alienate the group they discriminate against and other customers who are against this along with potential boycotts.

Segregation and Slavery making a come back in the deep south next? As long as someone's religion says so, it sounds like fair game.

Woah Woah Woah, I'm not a liberal :p I'm an independant who has disdain for a two party system, labels, and assumptions.

The issue isn't racism, but discrimination based on sexual orientation.

You guys, southern conservative Christians are a minority and need special protected status just like African Americans, women, or homosexuals. These special flowers need legal protection. Their faith could be blown a way in an instant by an atheist entering their business. Their marriages could end in divorce if forced to serve gays. It's all they can do not to shoot unarmed teens due to the constant fear and oppression they suffer from when forced to not oppress others.

So please won't you think of the conservative Christian children? And their kids?

Don't want laws like this passed... then don't sue people for refusing to participate in your gay wedding. Seems pretty simple to me.

Agree but also think they should be required to post a prominent sign stating their policy. No shirt, no shoes, no heterosexual, no service. If they're willing to publicly own their bigotry then they can keep it.

If they want to discriminate then they will make it very clear though. This is how it should work but too many big government supporters don't like it.

I can't say I'm surprised. In a country with states like Texas, Florida, Arizona, and Kansas, somehow Mississippi regularly ends up outdoing those others for most fucked up state. This is the state afterall where 46% of the GOP think interracial marriage should be banned.

Yeah, well so what?

They just have different views regardless of how jacked up we think they are. They have the same rights and freedoms to hold these views as you do to oppose them.

If we're a free country, then you really can't say anything when people dare to be different and/or have polarizing viewpoints.

No disrespect, but just shut the hell up. Maybe we should just vilify those who don't like chocolate while we're at it.

I agree religious people shouldn't have to follow any laws. Muslim taxi drivers shouldn't have to pickup single women.

Atheist kids should be able to walk out on moments of silent meditation in class now.

Hmm I wonder if abortion just became a fundamental religious right? :hmm:

Combine this with a potential win for Hobby Lobby and I can see a whole Pandora's box of unintended consequences!

Are you familiar with "sundown" towns? Are you comfortable with those returning?

Well you mental Pygmy, this law applies to all religions in Mississippi. So a Unitarian could easily discriminate against racist conservatives on the basis of his religion if he so chose.

There will be unintended consequences regardless of what you think. You wiper of other peoples bottoms. You silly Canadian bigot.

Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time.

His points are valid, sensical, and potential. Offer up debate, this reply doesn't do anything to confirm what others think of you.

This is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen someone post in P&N. Because we live in a free country we absolutely can and should say something when people have horrible viewpoints. As I find myself so often having to explain to the conservative members of this board, the First Amendment does not protect you from the scorn and disdain of others that comes from how you choose to exercise that right.

Your quite an impressive speaker. It's a wonder you don't run for parliament.

These other 85 times you've told people to STFU quite impressive as well.

Your skills at oratory have convinced me that this un-American legislated hate in freedom of religion guise is wonderful thing.

You son of a silly person.

On a more serious note, when Arizona tried this they backed down due to the unintended consequences. Their governor refused to sign it.

I think this is going to hurt national republicans in the next election. The more state legislatures pass these horrific laws the more independents and Dems will be motivated to get out and vote during what is historically a low turn out election.
