Mississippi Church Refuses to Marry Black Couple

They had booked their wedding far in advance. The invitations had been sent, the programs printed. But one day before Charles and Te'Andrea Wilson were to be married at the Mississippi church they frequented, they said a pastor told them they would have to find another venue -- because they were black.

There has never been a black wedding at the First Baptist Church in Crystal Springs, Miss., since its founding in 1883. According to Pastor Stan Weatherford, some church members objected so strongly to breaking that precedent, they threatened to oust him from his pastorship.

The church is now holding internal meetings to figure out how it should respond to future requests by black couples to be married there.

Thank God Obama's a Muslim. I wouldn't want any of those Christian values infiltrating America.

The only response the people of the area should have is to get that Church closed down.

That would be the best response the community could provide. This church outed itself as a dinosaur and, much like the dinosaurs, it should now go extinct.

But, wait. The only way that will happen is for the parish to abandon it and take all of their tithes with them. It was the members of this church who pushed the minister to make this poor decision. They will continue to attend this church in comfort now that they know they can browbeat the church leader to bend to their will.

Then there must be another option. That is to shame them into hiding. Perhaps the national attention that this story will surely garner will function as a high intensity flashlight that shines in the faces of these backwards thinking slugs and drive them back under the rock that they've been hiding under.

How do we know that really...

!@#$. Mississippi didn't fail to disappoint.

  1. Shame them on national TV.
  2. Stage a protest.
Gather a large, peaceful crowd, and have a sing along or something. Close enough, and loud enough starting on Sunday so you interrupt Church services. Oh, and make sure no one participating does business with the local town. Truck in supplies, have them travel to the next town, whatever it takes for them not to benefit.

According to the resident righties, if you're intolerant of their racism, that makes you just as bad.

At least they are racists in the open so people know who and where they are and can avoid them like plague. It's the closet-racist assholes that I truely hate. They are like dog poop on the sidewalk in the dark, you step on them and curse at yourself afterward for not being able to see.

No, according to righties if you preach tolerance itself as some kind of ultimate virtue and and then are intolerant of their racism it makes you a hypocrite.

A church does have the right to decide whom they will marry. The real problem is first agreeing to marry the couple and then deciding at the last minute not to.

If a group of racists want to congregate together in a church I have no problem with that so long as they are not jerks to others.

Only idiots can't make the distinction of being anti-gay as opposed to being anti-racism.

I don't find segregation among churches at all odd. There have traditionally been white churches and black churches. What I find odd is that this church apparently welcomes this couple to its services but then decided they couldn't marry there. That's the weird part.

Maybe they thought this couple were caucasian the whole time and now they just got a closer look?

If you're getting married in a church, there's paperwork involved - agreements that are made. The couple should be able to sue the church for breach of contract.

OMFG people today are too f^&((ng sensitive. Every chance someone gets to make a stink about race they do. Why not just choose another venue? Who says you have a right to this particular place? Yes there are ignorant people who still hold prejudices and there WILL ALWAYS BE. Get over yourself. Go where you're wanted and go on with life.

Go read the fucking article, they booked the wedding 'far in advance'. How about telling them right off the bat that they were racist and wouldn't allow them to marry there instead of waiting the day before the wedding.

OMFG people today are too fucking stupid to read and comprehend it. It's amazing that they know how to turn on their pc and use the internet.

Why would they 'frequent' (per the OP) that church to begin with? Racism this strong has to be obvious across the board, right?

Time frame means nothing. They need to get over it just like you need to get over thinking you are better than anyone else on this message board.

LOL. Time frame means everything. Folks book weddings upwards to a year or longer in advance. Have you ever been married or been part of a wedding? You know the amount of planning and money that is involved? Obviously not.

You think when family from all around the country are flying in/booked hotels that the church can cancel the day before when they already have booked the wedding far in advance.

If you're going to troll a thread, this is the wrong one b/c you're an idiot to think it was alright for the church to do this.
