Missing Wireless Networks in WinXP

I have an IBM laptop running winxp. Everything seems to be functioning fine, except I cant see any wireless networks.

I can access the network over a wire. (Cat5)
Hardware properties shows everything is fine.
I have uninstalled the adapter from within windows and updated the drivers.

I have connected an external usb wireless card with up to date drivers also. It shows intalled and functioning, yet still sees no wirelss networks.

I thought it may just be the internal minipci card just wiggled loose from its antena connection, but the usb card should have proven that wrong.

I have run Norton, spysweeper, spybot, and adaware.
All firewalls are turned off.

What could this be?

Not familiar with IBM model... but Toshiba lap has a really really small switch on the edge of the base... turns Wifi on/off.

Otherwise I assume you've gone thru Control Panel, checked that the network connection is Enabled.

I agree with lar123, check for a switch/button. My work laptop has a button that I accidently shut off once in awhile, the first time it happened it took me a couple of minutes to figure it out.

Does the wireless network you are trying to join have SSID turn on or off? if SSID is off the wireless network will not broadcast its existience, you will need to know its name (SSID) and
enter it manually. Also if someone took the time to turn off SSID there is probably an network
password.

Golddot's suggestion is a good one...and..it also demonstrates that wireless has suttle quirks that you must not overlook for proper operation.

Are you using Windows to discover the wireless networks? Thinkpads come preinstalled with IBM Access Connections - a wireless connection manager. It is vastly superior to Win XP's "connect to whichever access point seems most interesting".
Start > Programs > Access IBM > IBM Access Connections. Try it from within there.
