Missing .vxd and .dll Files??

I have a dual boot of w98se and XP. Working great up until the other night when I booted into 98 and was greeted with messages informing me of missing .vxd files (vnetsup.vxd, vredir.vxd, and dfs.vxd). I was able to enter through them where I then got the following message in Windows:

Windows Networking
Unable to load the dynamic link library
msnp32.dll
The system cannot find the specified file
Some of all of the the following feature is not available:
Microsoft Network

I was able to click OK and get my desktop and w98 seems to work OK (this is a standalone machine).

So far I have restored the the three .vxd files from the install disk, so the boot up messages regarding them are gone. I still get the .dll message, even thought I restored it too from the CD. Again, the OS seems to work OK. Found the instructions on restoring the .vxd files on the MS knowledge base, but can't seem to get the .dll restored, or the system to recognize it if it's in fact there.

How do I fix this?

Thanks.

Go into Network Properties under Control Panel.

Remove all the Protocols (but remember what they are). Reboot, then put them all back in again and reboot once more. That should resolve your problem.

I'm afraid that network protocalls are a bit over my head. Can you elaborate or point me to an MS Q that will help, or another source?

Thanks for the response!:)

OK, I've done a couple of Google searches that have pointed me in the right direction (I think). Specifically, looking at the system.ini and win.ini files for any reference to the .dll file (none found).

Also registering the file in question;

"Go to Start\Run and type the following:
: : regsvr32 msnp32.dll". Didn't help either.

Finally, found this tidbit:

"A program -- probably a dial-up communication application, such as Microsoft Network -- was removed by brute force deletion instead of by using an uninstaller. The call to the program remains in either the SYSTEM.INI file or in the Windows Registry or probably in both."

I still don't know what I did to cause this; I just want the message to go away!

Follow the instructions that I gave above. When you open up Network Properties, on the firs tab, there is a box at the top with items such as Client for Microsoft Networks, TCP/IP, Dial-Up Networking.

Write down what they are, and then remove each one.

Reboot, then go back in, and add each item again.

OK, I deleted all the entries under network properties. Upon rebooting, I get a series of BSOD' (sorry , left the specific messages at home), then a prompt to restart the computer. When I do, I get the same BSOD', then the same restart message. I can boot into safe mode, but not all of the network properties that were there before are available to be added back.

Any suggestons?

Thanks.

Any ideas on how I can fix this? XP (dual boot) seems to work OK, at least no problems so far.

Thanks.
