Missing Pin on a Socket370 CPU...Is it still usable?

Hello guys, I was wondering if anyone knows if a missing pin off the back of a 933mhz Intel Pentium III socket 370 processor is going to render the CPU worthless. I bought it off some guy on ebay who said it was a never used oem cpu. Only one pin is missing. Is it necessary for all pins to be on for the cpu to work. I am waiting for my mobo to ship in so I will not be able to test the processor until then. I emailed the guy I bought it from, and his response was that not all pins are used and that its there to keep it in place. I don't know if I should accept his response (he supposedly teaches A+ certification class and hence had this extra cpu I bought). Does anyone know if he is telling the truth or giving me a BS response. TIA.
😕

some pins are not used...

when i modded a tualatin i removed 3 pins to enable it to work on a bx mobo.. and the chip runs fine.

that said.. if i were u i would get a new chip with all the pins jus to be sure and i'm sure intel won't honor a warranty with a chip with a missing pin.

I agree with Kaiser. Someone selling on Ebay should be a little more responsible than that and just ask you to send that chip back and replace it with a new one in perfect condition. I wouldn't accept that as a response.

I do a lot of buying and selling on Ebay and while I don't expect things to be perfect if they were used, I do expect NEW products (or claimed new) to be in PERFECT new condition and not tampered with. If he doesn't replace the processor for you or at least send your money back, I'd leave negative feedback and contact Ebay immediately.

There are numerous pins on the PIII Coppermine that are reserved for future use and/or not utilized depending upon the platfirm it's used in.
If you could give us the location of the specific pin that is missing it would be a simple matter to check Intel's Tech docs to discover the usage of said pin.

That said, if he claimed it was a new OEM CPU that had never been used then I'd demand my money back as he clearly misrepresented the product. Any potential defects no matter how minor should be fully stated up front.

hey Rand, if I send you a picture of the position of the missing pin, can you figure out if it serves a purpose? I am currently asking for a refund if the processor won't work (heck I might just demand a refund without testing it). Is it okay if I email you?

Edit: Okay, I just posted a picture with an arrow pointing to the missing pin (disregard the red dots, I got this pic of some site inorder to illustrate the missing pin). Do you guys know if this pin serves a purpose? TIA...I appreciate your guys help🙂

Here is the link to the picture if the missing pin Here
