Missing "New Connection Wizard" in XP

I went to create a VPN connection, and the only thing visible in Network Connections under the CP is my existing LAN connection. I followed the steps in KB825826 , but it didn't fix it. Anyone encounter this?

Look on the left hand side under network task labeled "Create a new connection"

Or Control panel -> Internet Options - > Connections tab -> Then the add button.

Good call, tweekah. When viewing the CP in Explorer, there's an link under "Pick a category" labeled "Network and Internet Connections". Clicking that goes to a page with the heading "Pick a task..." Under that heading, there's a link to "Create a connection to the network at your workplace" That opens the DUN connection wizard.

That still doesn't explain how the regular wizard disappeared from the Network Connections folder, nor why the steps in the KB article failed to resurrect it. But at least I can create a VPN connection.

Thanks for your help. If anyone has ideas about how to restore the New Connection Wizard icon under the Connections folder, please post.

There's a UseNet response about this problem that says:

"Close the "folders" window on the left of the "Network
Connections" screen to reveal the "Network Tasks" menu."

I'm not exactly sure what a "folders" window is in this context, but if one is visible to you....

RM: That works, too. Clicking the 'Folders' button on the Explorer toolbar closes the folder treeview. A new panel replaces it, which contains a menu labeled "Network Tasks", just as reported. In the menu is a "Create a new connection" link that opens the regular New Connection Wizard.

I'm sure an icon for the New Connection Wizard used to be present in the Network Connections folder, but at least I can still get to it by this method. Very weird.

Thanks for your help.

You're welcome. I don't have a "New Connection Wizard" in my actual "Network Connections" window, either. Only the "Network Tasks" menu on the left, with the "Create a new connection" link.

Yeah, I think I've seen a link on the right part of the screen before, but it certainly isn't present on my own workstation at this time.
