Missing Memory

I have Windows 98 and 224MB of RAM. Because of performance degradation I uninstalled McAfee VirusScan 5.15 and installed my previous version 4.03. Now BIOS recognizes all 224 MB of RAM, but Windows only 161 MB. Any ideas as to what happened?

I see this post is going to get lost fast, moving it up! Do you think I should just reload Windows 98 or is there some way of telling where Windows is losing track of 63MB of RAM?

yea try that... or seat your memory just to be sure.. but i would say.. if you machine can handle it.. and you are reinstalling.. just go to 2k.. much better~!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd say reinstall. Many times these weird errors can be fixed but it may cause things to be messed up later.

Unfortunately, I have a Dell Dimension XPS D233 with an Intel AL440LX motherboard, upgraded with a PowerLeap PL-iP3 slotket and a Celeron 766MHz processor. There is something about this combo that Win2K does not like, so I'm limited to NT or 98.

your 766 can most definatley handle 2k.. what happens whenever you try to install it.. make sure you use NTFS instead of fat32... or if that doens't work switch them around....

The BIOS on my system is too old to support the new instruction set (SSE) on the newer Celeron-2 CPUs in Windows 2000, and it's unlikely that Intel will ever release another upgrade for the AL440LX. Newer versions of Windows likely detect the new instructions in the CPU, but choke on their not being supported by the BIOS - so it's very likely WindowsME is the last version of Windows I'll see that will work properly with my upgraded system.

Again, I see this post is going to get lost fast, moving it up! Do you think I should just reload Windows 98 or is there some way of telling where Windows is losing track of 63MB of RAM? What is the best way to reinstall Windows 98 and preserve my settings, registry, etc? I don't want to have to wipe my C drive and reload everything.
