So my mail is going missing these days because instead of locking it in the mailbox like the mailman should he has been handing it over to my sister instead.

I wouldn't care if:
1) My mail and bills wern't missing till days later.
2) It was her place.

What can I do ? Can I talk to the post office? Can I have them always deliver it to the mailbox instead of handing it over....

Have your sister arrested for opening your mail.

It's the only solution.

USPS should have to do background checks before handing over mail... or you could be less beta and talk to your sibling.

I agree with talking to his sister, but serious question: Why does no blame lay on the postman? Are they required to hand over mail to anyone claiming ownership? Can I walk up to one and say, "got any mail for Mr. Peoples?" and he's required to hand it over due to some kind of don't resist policy? Or does he have to ask for proof that you can open the mailbox with your key, or require you present state issued identification that he has to scan to confirm you're a resident of said apartment? Or is it just based on the honor system?

Seems like anything that that requires any kind of actual verification would be a tedious process to interrupt him for. No wonder the mail is always late.

talk to your postmaster, this issue will be solved in 10 min
Really? I've been complaining for 15 years about my USPS mail being mishandled. First it was being given to someone in another neighborhood when the address differed by a single letter (M/H). Then it was being misdelivered to a different street. Finally a different number.

I've had carriers reprimanded, removed, local managers removed, etc., and it still happens today on an almost weekly basis. The just don't give a fly fuck about doing their jobs.

I stopped a carrier three weeks back as she made her rounds. She said, "Sorry, i don't have anything for you today." "Really, because your website says I have two packages out for delivery today," I retort. She looks again and says, "Oh," scans the bar codes and gives me my [fucking] mail."

Fifteen years and counting. The one respite I got was for about two years between 2007 and 2009 because the M/H fiasco was met when the elderly woman committed suicide because I kept delivering her mail as the USPS wouldn't (not really, but she did die).

USPS workers are busy, but they simply could not care less about delivering the mail correctly. BTW, on Friday I was given my mail and the mail of someone else that lived on a completely differently named street. Only the house number was the same. I guess that is all that is required for future burger flippers.

I am assuming they are both residents of the dwelling. In that case, what the mail carrier is doing is fine. The problem is with the sister and, apparently, a brother that can't come up with simple solutions on their own.

I agree that the sister thing is a problem, but also a problem is how does the postman verify that she is a resident of the dwelling? If it's as simple as checking her ID, then fine. I just don't understand why it's an option. Seems like a real easy way to intercept mail, especially for a woman. Get friendly with the mailman for a few days, be seen around the building, then claim you live there. Almost like social engineering.

If someone wants to take my mail all they have to do is open the door to my mailbox. It would save the hassle of having to chat up the mailman. Just wait for them to drive up, put the mail in and leave.

Are we really to the point of blaming someone else for his sister not giving OP his mail? Are we really to that point in society where we can blame some unknown third person instead of taking any iota of personal responsibility?

In this day when most people are walking around with high res cameras and video recorders in their pockets, how is it not mandatory that we have a pic of the sister? How are we supposed to know (1) whether we care about this story, or (2) whether to side with the sister?

they are required to deliver mail to the address. that's it.

Last year i got into a pretty heated arguement with the regional USPS Manager about my Post office. I live in a small town and the USPS does not deliver mail to physical addresses in town. Everybody who lives in the town limits has to have a PO Box which is free due to the USPS making us have a Box. but if you live out in the stick they deliver... wtf. anyway If somebody sends me mail addressed to my physical address and not my po box the fucking retarded bitches at the Post office will send it back to sender. I've had bills late due to this shit and the one that got me fired up was my registration for new car. the DMV send it to my physical address when i told them several times do not use physical, use my PO Box. the funny thing is if its junk mail like coupons to Carls jr or some bullshit flyer addressed to my physical they will put it in my po box... but if it has in big red letters "Bill Enclosed,Second notice" they send it back... FUCK YOU!

so I started bitching at the postmaser, she told me to call the regional manager so i did. man that guy was a pure cock. he immediately had a chip on his shoulder and we got into it. and his go to answer was "we delivered your mail to a valid address" FUCK YOU, YOU PIECE OF SHT! my physical address is a valid address and you did not deliver it. Then he started in on that he does not have enough people to look up the street address and figure out what PO Box the mail should go into. My reply to that was and he did not like it one bit was. Well if you had all the people outside of town get a PO Box and deliver mail to all the people in town with community mailboxes your man-hours and mileage cost would plummet and guess what it would solve the mail sorting problem. yea he got pissed over that and im really not sure why. maybe because how dare some civilian tell this guy how to do his job even if its a valid suggestion.

anyway back on topic. since we have po boxes. ill end with this. I sent my kid down to the post office last saturday morning to get the mail. i started to hand him my key and he says he doesn't need it. i asked why and he said all he has to do is go to the counter and ask for the mail in box XXX and the USPS clerk will go get it and hand it to him....

A federal crime. I don't see how intercepting mail from the mailman is any different, except it involves two parties. He's not an unknown 3rd party. He's a government employee, with a face, who comes to your house on daily basis. A person that many customers know, and greet, and tip on holidays. This isn't a case of "don't blame the messenger." He's at least partially responsible for the delivering mail to the appropriate address.

Also, OP said nothing about his sister being a resident of the location the mail is addressed to. For all the mailman knows, she is a person with the same last name. Pretty sure he shouldn't be handing it over to her.

So the honor system then. Good to know.

If human interaction is difficult for you, spring for a PO Box.
Wife and I have been doing this since 14.9 years ago when 15 years ago the problem presented itself. Unfortunately not every can be directed to a POB. For instance, our original mortgage lender would not allow a POB. And early shipments of Amazon could not (some still can't) be sent to a POB.

And to add to that suggestion of yours, after a decade of good POB service then we starting getting mail that should have gone to other boxes.

Only option is to dress up as your sister so the postman can give you your mail.

Just wait till she moves out and fills out the forwarding wrong. All of your mail will go to her new place if you dont catch it.

This is easy. You just need to go to the post office and request an ID-10 T form.
id10t form

A form commonly used in U.S. bureaucracy, mostly military, as a form of light hazing for fresh recruits assigned to their first duty unit.

This works because of the way you say it as writing it down gives it away; it is pronounced "Eye Dee Ten Tango" as in "You forgot to get an id10t form from administration when you in-processed, go back and get one".
