Missing icons in Network and Dial-Up folder

While on the net last night I noticed the network connection icon in the system tray was missing, even though i had the check box ticked in the properties page. So went in to the Network and Dial-Up Connections folder and to my surprize it was empty??????
There should be 4 icons in there:
1. Make New Connection
2. Eircom Dail Up
3. NVIDIA
4. 3Com

I no longer use the Eircom as i've removed my Dial-Up modem, the NVIDIA is connected to my Broadband Router and i've never used the 3Com. The NVIDIA connection is working fine, I'm using it now, but i can't disconnect it as i can't find the icon and it's not in the system tray. I've done a search but nothing was found, so they weren't moved or deleted (to my knowledge anyway). I also checked the Recycle Bin but that too was empty even though i know there should have been a few files in there??????

I have been battling with some nasty spyware for that pass two days, maybe they're connected????

I'm using Win 2K SP4 with the latest updates and I'm running Kaspersky 6 antivirus, Spybot - search & Destroy and Ad-Aware SE Personal.

Does anybody have any Ideas?

I think I was a bit hasty in posting the above reply, because anything that was suggested in the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/269019/ link did not work. I even tried everything twice and i'm having no luck searching on google because all results are basically repeating everything in microsoft troubleshooter. Short of doing a complete reinstall of windows (which I don't want to do again, I had to do it TWICE in the past 8 months) i don't know what else to do.
So if anyone as any new ideas I would be in debt to you.

Thanks for your time.
If you need more info. let me know.

I've been a bit busy of late so my PC had to take a back seat for a while, but now i'm back and no my icons haven't re-appeared.

Shawn, thanks 4 your reply, i've been to the microsoft link u suggested and have tried everything there also, with no luck.
I've read through the anandtech link and i've done all the Shields UP! tests and the LeakTest, I passed with flying colours, so i know my firewall (ZoneAlarm Pro) is doing it's job, and i've been using zonealarm long before the icons went missing. So i doubt it was an outside job.

Finally, this just came to mind: I'd been updating windows on the same night the icons vanished, so maybe one of the Hotfixes caused it (I have to manually download all updates as automatic updates no longer work, but that's another issue i'm trying to solve).

To shawn and Sound guy; your links helped me get back to start with a dialup connection problem on my new setup.

Evidently, in my search for the problem, I caused more. Thanks for your inadvertant help.

During my research I found http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn/ which lists the hotfixes since SP2 and it includes two items for "missing icons" in network connections. Use the "search this page" feature of your browser to find all net references to locate the fixes.

I've been to your link xg and your right there is a hotfix for missing icons in dial up and connection folder but it for XP SP2, I'm using win2k SP4 *Darn*. Thanks anyway, i'll soldier on.

It's not a serious prob. more an annoying one, those icons should be there, but they're not and I didn't delete them and one else uses my PC.
