wrong forum
and no, there aren't any

Descent Freespace 1/2 were good...loved Wing Commander.

Why they aren't making any I don't know...they are my favorite type.

seriously, i remember the good ol days of x-wing vs. tie fighter. X3 is sorely lacking in the combat field, but i guess that isn't what they were going for anyway....
is it too much to ask for a joystick based space shooter?

Freespace 2 was/is the pinnacle of space combat sims. One of my top 5 of all time. It had spectacular combat mechanics, lots and lots of ships, a great story... oh and the capital ship battles were jaw-dropping. As far as current projects, isn't X3 a space sim? I hear it's supposed to be coming out sometime in the near future. 🙁 I want my Freespace back. The story wasn't complete!

::Edit:: oh whoops guess it's been released already. Shows how excited I am.

yeah X3 was released already. it's a space sim alright... major emphasis on sim. lots of empty space. but the targeting/control system made combat a pretty much a soley tactical affair. If you got outnumbered or outgunned, no amount of skill would save you. And even if you were matched with your enemy, battles were not really much fun.

Just out of curiousity, why DID space sims fall out of favor? I mean, I figure Freespace 2 was a big hit. It shouldn't be that hard to create another worthy game. You got the Freespace, Star Wars, Star Trek, Wing Commander universes well established. All you'd need to do was to make some new ships, add some creative weapons, add some varied environments (asteroid fields, floating mine fields, moons etc.), up the graphics and the game should be fun. It sounds like a lot but considering the amount of money and effort they pump into FPS's, it should be pretty easy. The ONE thing I liked about Battlecruiser is that you could fight in space and on planets. Maybe they should take a shot at that element too. I'll always refer back to freespace but they did everything right with the sequel. They added some incredible, MASSIVE battles, a great story, a few new environments and a few new ships and they had a winner.
::sigh:: /rant

I've been wanting to play one since Battlestar Galactica started showing. No one makes games like that anymore.

They did make a Battlestar Galactica game and released it around the time of the mini-series....but it pretty much bombed.

No one 's mentioned Homeworld?

Not really in the X-Wing vs Tie Fighter line of space combat games....

It's a good to great game but is more like an RTS than a classic space sim or space combat game.
