Missing files in windows?

This bit of lore resurfaces periodically. When Windows is installed it determines what is required for your system and creates a file called VMM32.VXD that contains all the required files in question. If you examine several different systems you will see that VMM32.VXD is of a different size depending on the equipment in that system. The (....) mentioned in the article indicates that the file named is in VMM32.VXD. You can manually install the files if you want to because it will do no harm unless you install a wrong version but tests have shown that any perceived improvement in performance is not quantifiable.
