Three people chip in $10 dollar each to purchase a gift, the gift cost $25 dollar, the store clerk stole $2 dollar, and only give them $1 each in change.

3*$10=$30-$25(gift)-$2(store clerk stole it)-$1*3(refund)=0
that mean three people take out $9 dollar each (10-1)
here is the question
$9*3=27+2(stole by store clerk)=29
but t hey take out $10 dollar each so total of $30
30 doesn't equal to 29
where did the missing dollar go

8.33 + 8.33 + 8.33 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 30 right?

they each have $9.333333333333333333, not $9

or the clerk stole $2.99

It didn't go anywhere. If each give $9 for a $25 gift then the clerk still keeps the $2, it is not a math anomoly but a word trick.

heard this before but in a different way:

3 dudes split a hotel... room was $30.

bellboy was told room was actually $25, not $30. Decides to keep $2 and refund $3 to them so they can split it evenly.

So they paid $9 each.

I think the key is to add the $9 x 3 to the $3 that was refunded... not the kept $2.

This makes it $30. Its a trick question and the wording is what trips peeps up. You're not suppose to add the $2, you're suppose to add the $3 they're given back.

we just had it about a pizza 3 men order.

anyway if this really confuses you then you may need to go back to school and re-take basic math

huh? each person pays 10 dollars. thats 30.

gift costs 25.

so they should receive 5 in change.

clerk steals 2...3 remains.

clerk then gives each of the three people 1 dollar.
