I don?t have intimate knowledge (yet) with this PC because someone else assembled it, but it?s got the following:
Mobo: Gigabyte (with VIA chipset)(will identify and post model number later);
Sound: integrated;
Modem: phone (PCI);
RAM: 1 GB (generic, I believe)
CPU: AMD XP2800+;
Video Card: EVGA vanilla nVidia 6800 (128MB of RAM) video card (AGP)(previous card was a GeForce4 MX420);
HDs: 2 Maxtor 200GBs (each);
OS: Windows XP Homer Version (with all updates);
NO Anti-virus or anti-adware software; and,
AOL software for internet (dial up).
Sorry for the lack of details above, I?ll find out more today and update the components list. The hard drives are relatively ?unused? because they were recently reformatted and the OS ?reinstalled? by someone other than me.
I'm not sure if the display adaptor tab was missing prior to removal of the GeForce4 MX 420 card, cause I didn't think I'd have a problem trying to upgrade from an nVidia based card to another nVidia based card (no driver issues) so I didn't "remove" the original drivers (if they were ever present).
In an attempt to ?update? the drivers for the video card and/or ?find? the video card listed in Device Manager, Hardware, I?ve done the following:
1. Done a few google searches and found several other peeps with similar issues, but they apparently could not fix their problems either (1 person reformatted and apparently did correct the ?missing? display adaptor? tab). I don?t want to reformat, but will if absolutely necessary.
2. Started in ?safe mode? and looked in Device Manager, Hardware for a ?Display Device? tab (no display device listed).
3. Looked in Device Manager, Hardware, View (tab) for ?hidden hardware? (no display device listed).
4. Tried updating the display driver using the EVGA driver Disk and I get an error message something to the effect of: ?the disk does not contain any drivers matching your hardware?.
5. Went to Run, MSCONFIG, Startup and turned off all ?extra? software programs at bootup to include, but not limited to, the following: Soundman, AOL (3 items), RealNetworks, and QTime.
6. Uninstalled a few ?games? and miscellaneous programs which I thought may be causing the issue.
7. Looked around in the BIOS for clues as to why the video card is not ?seen? and changed a setting or two to no avail (to include dropping down to 4x AGP). I?ll look around some more later.
8. Looked in Control Panel "Add/Remove Software" and there does NOT appear to be any video card related software present.
Also, since this PC does not have access to high speed internet, my efforts are more than just a little hampered due to time issues.
Thanks for any suggestions.
