Missing 16 megs of ram

The bios shows the correct amount which is 3072.
But windows says I have 3056.
I do not have onboard video.
But where in the world has that 16 megs gone.
Is it possible one of my sticks is bad?
What else could be causing it.

Anyone know if it possible that the ram is being reserved by the peg (whatever that is)?

PCI Express Graphics = PEG.

Sounds like a ROM reservation. Is your Windows 32 bit? You're really close to the limit where this happens. Most likely if you were running a 64bit version all of the memory would show up. 16MB is nothing to lose sleep over that's for sure.

well I had this same thing when I was only running 1 gig. So my worry is that one of my 512 sticks has a bad memory bit on it or something. The bios shows fine, but windows and all applications say I am less 16 megs. I cannot figure out where it might be.

That means that there's nothing wrong with any of your sticks of RAM, then.

My car isn't running right, its an import, four door, sedan, with tires. Anyone know what the problem is based on this detailed description of the vehicle year, make, model, and symptoms?

mem test also only shows me 3054 megs of ram.
So.. does this mean my ram is bad?
Or does this mean the bios has it?

OKAY
I took each stick out one by one and ran each one. Everysingle stick has 16 megs missing so obviously either the bios is not doing something right, or the bios is stealing 16 for something. Either way I am down to contacting intel to find out where it is going right now.

Thanks for your help guys.

okay tcsenter your point taken. It is an intel dp965lt with ampo ddr2 800 ram in a config of 2 - 1 gig and 2 - 512 running dual channel.

I may be mistaken but if you are running 2x512 as dual channel and running 1 GB in single channel then you are not runnin dual channel at all anymore.

It is an intel dp965lt...running dual channel.
From ASUS FAQ on Intel 965-based P5 motherboards:

Q. My P5B-V motherboard always detect 8MB of RAM less than expected when operating under single channel or dual channel asymmetric mode, and 16MB less when operating under dual channel interleaved mode. Why is that? Is there any ways to release them?

A. This is simply because this motherboard adopts the new Intel AMT/AFSC technology which occupies 8MB of RAM space at all times due to the need to use Intel ME (Management Engine) technology. As dual channel interleaved mode requires both DIMMs to be in the same size, another 8MB of RAM will be taken from the second dimm on the other channel to balance the two channels. Hence, this is normal for this board. Also, as this motherboard requires ME enabled to function, there is no way to release this memory space.

Yet another case of RTFM/FAQ

except that I dont have an asus board and intel doesnt meantion this at all in their facts anywhere.
Also it does infact run dual channel because it has 4 dims first one is 1 gig second is 512 third is 1 gig and 4 th is 512. bios says it is running dual.

I wonder wonder how it is running dual channel interleave when I am running ddr2 800s. I would have excepted it to run in assym mode.

Thanks tscenter. I wish this had been in the intel manual. Oh well at least I now know it is doing what it is suppose to be.

I wasnt meaning the config I thought it had to be same speed as the bus to operate in interleave. Obviously I was wrong.

I wonder if it matters.. in that example they go 512 then 1 gig and I go 1 gig then 512.
It probably makes no diff to the system.

Just pretend the 16MB is taken up by importantsystemthing.exe and don't worry about it - you are running with 3GB of RAM after all, you're not going to miss it.

This is intels reply:
Regarding this issue with your Intel(R) Desktop Board DP965LT, please be aware that it is expected behavior to have 16~18MB of RAM less, in the operating system report.

This is because the BIOS and the Intel(R) Quiet System Technology require this amount of system memory, and it is therefore reserved, and not visible by the operating system.
