Mispronouncing computer terms is funny :)

Just got off the phone with the king of mispronunciation!

He had a problem with his poop3 server not accepting his logan information when using a mo-DEM to connect through the peepee server.

I'm easily amused though 🙂

*Edited for minor spelling error*

gigabyte, I hate it when people say jigabyte, that's not even a measurement.

"At first I thought, like many fellow scientists, "Surely, Christopher Lloyd is just having fun with us! That's not how you pronounce gigawatt!"

Shortly thereafter, I got a nice laminated sheet from IUPAC with units and prefixes on it. They took special care to point out that giga- (the correct spelling!) was pronounced with the first g as a hard g, and the second, as a soft one! According to my Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (1993) the first (preferred) pronunciation is " 'ji - ge " (as in jiggle) and the alternative pronunciation is " 'gi - ge " (as in giggle)."

A jiggabyte is the amount of Brandy you need in Christmas Cake.

Honest.

I like "intraweb superhighway". mmakes me laugh.

We shouldn't though, not everyone is a techy nerd, and we get paid lots more because of this.

I see...so when my friend asked to borrow my CPU, he only wanted that part and not the whole laptop?

no the cpu is the central processing unit that installs onto the motherboard of said computer, the computer is a culmination of parts consisting of control logic, processing unit, and input and/or output devices.

No, he's saying that the guy wanted the whole laptop, not just the processor located inside!

I'm being serious. You guys are stuck in PC world. But by defintion the "big hunk of metal under the desk" is called a CPU. A processor is also called a CPU.

no, the big hunk of metal under the desk is called a computer, or a PC (acronym for Personal Computer)

if my name were Charles Perot Uemura could I also be called CPU? then we'd start calling EVERY NOUN cpu, just like the MARKLAR aliens on southpark!! 😛

meh, semantics.

by definition CPU can be used to term the big hunk of metal as it really is the central processing unit. Its rare these days that somebody calls a processor a "cpu", because its not really correct.

My old boss said "mo-DEM" and called his entire box the CPU, but he was far from computer illiterate.

However, my favorites are people who say "Windows Me" instead of M-E, and "pick-a-mickie" for PCMCIA (although I realize its common tech lingo, its still funny).
