I'm really stoked about this one.

Mirror's Edge is one of my favorite games in life. I think it was a big risk to approach this kind of movement from a first-person perspective, and obviously a lot of people didn't like it, but I loved the immersive, frenetic feel to doing it this way.

Not a whole lot of real gameplay in the trailers yet, but it looks like the fantastic artistic direction is still there.

BTW...is it just me or is that the Prophet (Crysis) voice actor at 1:33?

It looks good, I really liked the original game, I thought it was fast paced, fun and quite unique, something refreshing in among all the CoD clones. I can't wait for more Mirror's Edge, I hope they move towards something like an open city which has a lot more freedom, the worst thing I could say about the first was a bit too linear. Oh and rift support would be epic cool.

I tried Mirror's Edge and just did not dig it, I don't think first person perspective suits that kind of action/platforming personally. It always bugged me in HL and Borderlands as well since you basically can't look at where you're going and know where your feet are at the same time.

It was an interesting Idea and I bought it at release. I did not care for it, and from my understanding it did not sell well. MY question, with so many games that have done well, why reboot one that didn't. What is the reasoning behind this? Are they going to take the flaws of the new game and fix them, add stuff , or? I am at a loss here, there are far better game to need a reboot, and me I would prefer something NEW far more then a reboot of game that didn't do well. But to those who are excited, since they are doing it, here is too it being great, you guys liked it, hope you get what you expect!

Honestly, I did not expect this...especially from EA as the publisher. I always knew that DICE loved the game and the people that did love it (me being one of them) gave it a bit of a cult-like following.

A small group of passionate fans, however, is no reason for execs at EA to decide to invest in a AAA reboot of a game. Maybe they're thinking the game has potential for a more widespread appeal than the first game was able to capitalize on. That thought could be good or bad....depending on how much they decide to "casualize" what was a decently difficult game.

It sounds like that's the direction they're heading. As per the dev:

"From the highest skyscrapers to the darkest tunnels, the city of Glass is yours to explore. There are no levels, no loading screens, just the freedom to choose what you want to do."

I think it was combination of demand by fans and critics, as well as the changing social views of the industry thanks to the likes of Gamergate. An obviously strong and capable non-caucasian female protagonist is what alot of people are demanding, and Faith fits the bill quite nicely. She was an established and loved character well before all this SJW crap in the gaming industry so she in fact satisfies both sides. Also, there is sort of a demand for more indie & art-house games as well as a demand that devs and publishers support that part of the industry. I guess it's sort of how the public likes to know that a corporation donates some of it's profits to charitable organizations. That makes the corp look better in the public's eye which can have numerous benefits.

Mirror's Edge I think was a great combination of being something familiar (first person), but different (free-running and environment traversing), with good attention paid to recreating the feeling of free running to the subtleties of the level and art design along with the very awesome and unique soundtrack.

Thanks String.

I just hope that this new game is able to satisfy the fans and newcomers alike by not resorting to pandering.

EA's dicking around with always-online DRM again by trying to add multiplayer elements to single player games.

Mirror's Edge is one of those fantastic games that never really garnered a big audience. It's a flawed but unique experience. One of the few titles I actually pre-ordered after being so thoroughly impressed with the demo.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this game. They're getting rid of the shooting mechanic, which is great. Combat was the weakest part of the first game. Faith shouldn't be using guns anyway. In game footage from the new trailer looks good too. World is much more vibrant. I see some inspiration from Mass Effect and Remember Me in the art design. Faith's design is also a lot more realistic than the first game.

Not sure how well the open world is going to play out though while still maintaining fluidity.

It might be interesting if they add a quick-save. The save point method sucks with this game.

I don't think this has to do with Gamergate or any of that BS. Dice has been saying for years they wanted to do more Mirror's Edge but they've had a hard time getting the ok because of the commercial failure of the first one. I think this might be one of those things that EA ok'ed to appease them (considering all that Dice does for EA it'd be smart to keep them happy).

I also think there's two other reasons this game got greenlit. Dice can really show off the power of their game engine with a real open world, and this should be one hell of a game to play on a VR headset. I think they also believe it could be more successful. This a game kinda like Psychonauts or Beyond Good and Evil, where critics seemed to love it, and it had a cult following but it just didn't hit mass appeal for whatever reason (sometimes it's just timing, and I think EA probably thinks this will go over better with VR).

That multiplayer stuff is BS though. Make it actual multiplayer if you're going to pull that. I could even see them implementing a single player ranking deal by having races and other things, but unless they make it so you can have a lot more impact this definitely comes off as junk to force you to have to be online. To me this would make a good sandbox game where you just let people go in and have fun. Have a lobby where a bunch of people can do different things or even just sit and chat while watching other people (like a digital skate park or something).

They are eliminating the already weak shooting mechanism , leaving what, a first person runner? Travel through an open world seeking things to run from? Maybe that's the category to compete with Alien Isolations's new category, the first person hider. Obviously not my bag. Also, maybe it's just me but seems to me that the sex and race of the protagonist in first person shooters is irrelevant except to social justice warriors. You never see your character except in Duke Nukem (damn, I'm looking good) so what does it matter? Make me an elderly lesbian albino Bushman with hairy facial warts, I literally don't care.

I think this one may sell better, especially on consoles. There are myriad soccer moms not at all comfortable with first person shooters who would probably love a game they can give the kidlets where they aren't killing anyone, ever. And it's probably also good for people who game heavily and are just burned out on shooters and RPG shooters.

I don't really see the "hider" part. They've reworked the physical combat mechanics, so she's still capable of putting up an offense. I think that approach fits well with the overall gameplay style of ME, but I'm not totally convinced that dropping armed combat is the best move.

I guess I'll find out when I play it.

Maybe just set it in an open city with very strict gun laws. Then it would make sense I suppose.

I liked the original quite a bit. Enough to finish it anyway. It was weakest when they gave you guns, but it looks like they realized that. It was a very bright and colorful game during a time when nearly every game was gritty browns and greys. I'm glad to see they're trying to bring it back.

I loved ME and am excited about a reboot. I thought ME 1 was less successful because it had a failed shooting component in a time of first person shooter popularity and it needed more options to go full run and gun.
I was hoping they would add more melee and firearms to this new one, but also allow the option to be non-combative for additional achievements. Sadly now you can't do anything but knock people out as you rush by them. The option to stand and fight or make a strategic retreat has been taken from you.

People forget that the original Mirror's Edge was never supposed to be a shooter. I suspect it was tacked on by marketers to give the game broader appeal. The developers said they didn't want people using guns though, and there's even a trophy for beating the game without them.

Unfortunately, because melee combat was so clunky it was often easier to resort to guns. Especially towards the end. I hope that gets fixed in the new game. Some more non-lethal options to subdue enemies would be nice.
