mirroring hds of different sizes?

our 10G hdd is shown as 3G in windows (perhaps a non-dos partition is taking up the rest?). the hdd is going bad and we want the data off of it. our new hdd is 18G...can we simply mirror the 10G onto the 18G? or do they have to be identical to mirror?
 
ummm if the HD is going bad why the hell dont you just copy the data to the second drive and RMA/trash the old one?
 
yeah, you're right, i'll just copy the data. i like to make things much more difficult than they have to be...welcome to the world of IT.
