I want to mirror a physical drive running win2k server (temporary, current drive has bad sectors), I know its best if the slave drive was the exact same model as the master, but what if I can't find that, it's a WD 300AB (30GB, 5400 rpm, 2mb) the only thing I can find is WD 300 BB (30 GB, 7200 rpm, 2 mb). will this work

When you say Mirror are you talking about Raid 1 or as in Cloning a drive ?

If your wanting to clone a drive then it really doesn't matter spec wise as long as you have enough capacity in the drive your cloning to .

Quite a few drive manufacturers have their own copying utility , also Norton Ghost is an excellant way to clone a drive .

thanks for the reply GAZZA, I guess cloning would work, I want to mirror the 2 drives, then take the master (old HD w/bad sectors) offline and make the slave (new HD) the new master. I don't just want to copy content from one to another, I want the new drive to become the new master disk for the server. or maybe there's a better way to do this

Let me get this right , do you currently have 2 drives installed on your pc ?

Or does the one your buying become the second one that you want to make master instead of the slave that your currently running/booting from ?

If so what is your current master drive or is it a cdrom ?

I don't just want to copy content from one to another, I want the new drive to become the new master disk for the server.

Well that is what cloning will do , it will copy the whole drive/partition you have .

If you have the new drive as the secondary master then just clone the drive and all should be as you have it now but with the new drive .

There only one HD right now and it has bad sectors on it, so I would like to replace it with a new HD, easiest way without having to reinstall everything is to mirror/clone the current HD and then make the new HD the master and throw away the current disk with bad sectors. you are right, cloning would do the job for me without have to mirror the disk.

thanks for the help

How old is the current drive ?

If it's not too old it still maybe in warranty , if so then you can RMA it and get a replacement !
