mIRC help!!! How do I mask my IP? How safe is mIRC?

irc if the fastest way to get hacked if someone doesnt like you or just decides he wants to be mischeivious.

I've been using irc since 97 and i have yet to be "hacked". Please explain how someone gets hacked, other than recieving files/trojans(that give someone else total control) from unknown people and running the file. And if you do run a file/trojan like that you obviously have the word idiot stamped on your forehead.

One way i've seen people being "hacked" is by having their file sharing option turned on for some unknown reason, this basically gives anyone out there access to your computer. Again, lets stamp the word idiot on your forehead.

If your a linux user you better have your telnet deamon turned off or someone with enough knowledge of common exploits will definetly tamper with your system, unless you patched yourself against them.

Last and not least is a dos attack, someone floods your ip with ping requests, this basically cuts your connection off for a couple of minutes or hours depending how good of a day the "hacker" is having.

How do you avoid all this on irc? Dont piss people off, or just get a shell and install bnc.
How many people on irc will "hack" you? Maybe .1 percent.
Of course this mainly happens when you piss off that .1 percent, which basically means it'll happen to you maybe once a year 😉

alpha, there is no way of masking your ip, so you cant nef without being known. and its pretty safe, ive been using mirc fro years and years never have had a problem. and if you ever get something sent to you and you have no idea what it is dont except it youll be fine.

1. Configure mirc to automatically reject all file types except those that can't hurt, this means no executables, no mirc, vbs or other scripts.

2. If you download executable files from someone you can't trust 100%, don't run them.

3. Install a software firewall like ZoneAlarm. A software firewall will prevent malicious mirc scripts or other programs from scanning your computer for active trojans or shared drives.

4. Install an antivirus program.

5. Accept the fact that your computer is still vulnerable despite all safety measures.

the 100% surefire way to make sure you dont get hacked...unplug your modem cable or ethernet cable...theres no perfectly secure computer.

well, there is such a thing as a secure computer.

unfortunately the only secure computer is one that is not plugged in ;-)

Mirc is not safe....but with the sheer amount of ppl that use the thing...chances of your computer being hacked are fairly slim, just dont p!ss off anyone and you should be ok...but do get a firewall like the one previous mentioned..youd be surprised at all the things that try to access your system....i was passed a vbscript that deleted my entire mp3 collection off my harddrive once.
