Mint Debian is really nice

I just gave it a go and it's really fast on my system.

It only uses a little more than 100mb of ram on a cold boot, which is barely more than the LXDE based distros use, plus you get the full functionality of Gnome.

It's still rough around the edges, but so far I really like it.

You get all the nice Mint themes by default, along with the Mint Updater, and I assume their bug fixes as well. It also gives you a live cd and a way simpler (and better IMO) installer.

There's also the fact that you get the standard Mint suite of applications which is very nice.

So far Mint Debian is my favorite distro of all time, and I have tried a lot of distros.

What's the benefit over running Debian?

since nobody gave you the real answer here. Mint is known for 1 thing over all others. The codecs for everything come pre-installed. You are technically suppose to download the stripped down version without these codecs in the united states and other places with copy write laws.

In other distros for example Debian you usually have to add some 3rd party repository then install mplayer to get the codecs you need.

Note the separate download for USA/Japan on their download page.

Gotcha. I never really got on with Mint. The last time I did a trial install, the installation process was kind of buggy. I'm not sure why. I didn't have problems with Ubuntu, and at the install stage, they're virtually identical; not that the final product is that different as far as that goes.
