First time Hot Deals Post!

I've been looking for a good price on this camera for a while. Add the $50 amazon promotional certificate, and it looks like a pretty good deal!

My thoughts exactly. I've had my eye on this one for a while, but if a newer, i.e. smaller model
is on the horizon, I may wait another month or so.

By the way, that Z1 is very nice too! I may have to become a two-minolta household ;)

Minolta and others just started rolling out some new models. There is a preview of some of them in Digital Photography magazine. I'd have to find it again to say exactly what is being offerred but that is something I'll have to do later. All it means though is that we get some really nice deals on great digicams! These "older" models are full of features and still top notch offerings. I recently bought a Dimage S414; another "old" model and just love it. 4MP-4x Optical zoom and takes wonderful pics.

That is one good looking camera, functions at least. Read a review and they had nothing but good things to say about it.

also released the dimage g500 which i just got, its canon s400 sized but much better, and the g400 is coming out soon which is smaller then s400, g500 is like 350 its an excellent camera so far, except for minolta only including 16meg cards with their cameras

Minolta has always made good cameras and in my opinion seem to be starting to challenge canon's domination in the quality of small cameras(finally canon might have to drop its prices if it realizes it has some serious competition.)

I just got my Xt and it is great. I have 2 Olympus digitals (one with 10x optical zoom) and a Fuji digital. Needed something small and the Minolta Xt beat out the Pentax S4 for lag time and not having that zoom lens sticking out. I paid $259 delivered....so this would be a great price.

Boy it sure is tempting. I've got a Canon s110 I bought a few years ago paid a little over $400 for it. :Q

I really like a small camera this one seems perfect! ;)

Ditto on the recommendation for the G500. Very good quality mini digital camera, 5mp. I think it's probably head of the class for mini digicams...Got mine for $225 locally (one-off deal, sorry, there won't be any more)...can't complain about that!

very difficult to make a compact high quality lens, all though i can say with relatively high certainty that the photo labs are trying...they didn't think it was possible to make a 3x zoom as small as they did on the pentax optio s or casio exilim but they figured it out, its only a matter of time before they fit a 4x into a camera the size of the s400 and the like

bought this camera last week $250 shipped from www.etronics.com (a++ btw). here are a few pics:

1.) Day pics around UT austin campus
2.) Night pics around UT austin campus... sorta frustrating without tripod, also was experimenting with light and flashes.
3.) More Night pics from last night's Built to Spill show at Stubb's here in austin.; i was more pleased with these, especially #8. not sure what the speckles are on some pics, but my friend assumes it was the flash reflecting off smoke particles from all the w33d. on these pics, the blurry ones were with no flash, and the crisper ones were with normal daytime flash setting (NOT night portrait)
4.) quick size comparison

this is a nice deal as you can get a 128mb kingston card from amazon.com for like $50 unless you wanna save the gift cert for somethin else :) if i hadn't already bought this camera 5 days ago *grumble* i would definitely hook myself up with this.

Mindliner,

You know, that pile of trash could be considered a work of art. Amazing talent indeed.

I really appreciate your effort to post all of these pics...i was on the fence on this and after seeing these was able to make a decision. I've already got a digicam but need new features and better quality images than what I've got. The quality of these images definately look better than what I have currently but I'd like even better and will probably go for 5mp at a minimum. Great sized/prices cam for anyone that doesn't already have one though!

I need a pocket camera. Since I already have a full-featured S50, if I were to get one of those small dye-sublim printers that hook up directly, could I hook this camera up to it or am I now stuck with Canon products?

Heinrich: not sure if this is what you want, but (from the manual):

USB DIRECT-PRINT allows still images to be printed directly from a compatible Epson printer.

Thanks, was reading on DPReview that what I'm looking for is PictBridge, which this camera may not support (?) most of the Canons do with a firmware upgrade.

Probably mentioned but a good place to check for what's new, coming, reviews etc is
dpreview.com

The forums there are a decent place for answers too.

These little Minoltas score high on compact-ness and coolness, but the optics are small enough that you are definitely giving up some quality vs. even other compact cameras. Eg the Canon S50 is a far more serious camera than the Minolta DimageX series - more real features, better lens, etc.

The other big issue is the memory cards - most Canons use CompactFlash, which is a little bulkier but waaaayyyy cheaper than most other formats.

But - I'm a big believer that the camera in your pocket takes a lot more pictures than the one sitting in your desk drawer at home .... the Minolta is certainly one to consider for the keep-it-with-you type camera to catch a lot of photos you'd otherwise miss. And this is the third gen of that camera (Dimage X and Dimage Xi) so presumably it should be pretty well worked out. The people I know that have bought them really like them, but you have to realize you're getting more of a snapshot camera - which is what most people want, anyway.

Steves Digicams can be worth a look too.
