Minolta camera recognized, but can't do anything

I have a Minolta Dimage S404 with a Win XP Pro machine. I follow the directions to plug the camera into my USB, but no pop-up box appears asking me what I want to do. I can't see it under Win Explorer or Control Panel|Scanners&Cameras. It does show on Device Manager as a USB Mass Storage Device and as a Storage Device ("Generic volume"). Also, the icon on the bottom right to safely remove hardware does recognize the USB Mass Storage device.

I'm connecting everything in sequence. My PC even makes a pleasant tone when I connect the camera. But I can't do anything!

What stupid mistake am I making? Thanks.
