MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? A nurse who authorities say got his kicks by visiting Internet suicide chat rooms and encouraging depressed people to kill themselves is under investigation in at least two deaths and could face criminal charges that could test the limits of the First Amendment.

The report also said Melchert-Dinkel checked himself into a hospital in January. A nurse's assessment said he had a "suicide fetish" and had formed suicide pacts online that he didn't intend to carry out.

This guy is screwed up

I don't think every mod in every forum will be able to delete every thread that suggests TPAD, DIAF, etc...

The Internet really is going to be a challenge as far as free speech goes. As long as we always err on the free speech side that's good. But it gets tricky - harassment, stalking, assisting or pushing suicide? You can't do that over the phone so that means you can't do it over The Internet.

The internet is not special, it's a form of communication.

Apply the same concepts off-line and you would on-line, voila!

Forum communication is special since it's kept on servers. There's an evidence trail already in place that you would otherwise need a wiretap warrant.

What does that have to do with anything? I can stand in front of you and tell you to kill yourself all day long. What's the difference?

Forum communication can show a record of harassment. Many states and even the federal level are drafting laws to address it.

The internet has changed everything. It's naive to think we should treat it like any other form of communication.

You're a sick fuck. Even if you genuinely believe that they're wrong, there's no doubt that the vast majority of environmentalists are trying to do something good, and you think they deserve to die because of it. What good have you ever done, you sociopathic piece of shit?

No, they are not doing anything good. They are harming us. They should go kill themselves if they want to preserve the earth as their very existence is against their goals.

I've never had suicidal thoughts so it's difficult for me to sympathize. I can't imagine taking anything said on the Internet serious enough to react to it on a personal level. Weak minded people.

You need to stop taking things so seriously.

It has increased the volume and speed of communication, in that regard it's clearly revolutionary.

It has not changed what is communicated, just how.

You can't honestly believe that, surely?
