I am planning on opening a wamu free checking account because the ATM locations are much more convenient than what I currently have. Their site doesn't seem to specify a minimum for opening new accounts. Since there aren't monthly minimums--I assume I can open an account with $1?

I'm only asking because I left my checkbook at my parent's place and thats how much cash I have right now.

Check their website.

Also if you're a student look into their "student checking account" offers. With my current bank I have a checking account with no min. balance, no per check fees, a free debit card (I can use it as many times as I like), online banking, and a bunch of other stuff all for being a college student (full time).

$1 it is... have 2 "free checking" accounts with them, and them alone. They're great... great customer service and they've never fuct anything up in the ~3-4 years I've been with them... even better now that they opened up another branch closer to home.
