Hello. What are the minimum hardware requirements for playing MP3's on a computer? Are they minimized with Linux or DOS? Can someone recomend a good, minimum requiment MP3 player for either operating system. Also, are there any good programs out there for Linux or DOS that display a full screen analizer? Thanks!

Well winamp is good.
As for minimun requirements i'd say a sound card. ;)
I dunno but a 100 mhz pentium with 16 megs of ram should be good enough.

NOt 100% sure about this thouhg.

My 486 DX2/66 with 32ram couldnt play MP3's smoothly.. But I dont think I tried adjusting the settings.. So long ago.. I'd say 486DX4/100 min.. Or a P90.. 16megs ram should handle it.

Any pentium should be sufficient, although 90 MHz or higher is recommended if you expect to use high bitrate files (>192 kbps).

A 486 is likely to give glitchy performance if decoding files with a bitrate higher than 64 kbps.

I can get my mom's old Compaq to play mp3's w/o skipping, but you can't do anything else while playing them... It's a 486@66 DX2 w/ 16M. I was really amazed that the ol' puter could pull it off...

I don't know if I would cal them powerfull. I am pretty sure they use specialized ICs to decode MP3s since that is all they are designed to do. If I remember correcty, MP3 decoding ICs are pretty cheap and widely avaliable (though I might be thinking of MP2 decoding ICs)
