This doesn't really belong in a technical forum because it isn't exactly very important and runs along the lines of what your favoritie game is IMO. What would you say would be the absolute minimum requirements for a computer to have a 1X/2X cdrom drive? 486? 386? 286? 8086? 8088??

The slowest computer i remember seeing with a cd-rom drive was a 386, but i suspose that you could get one on a 286 if you had the right interface card and drivers.

There is no minimum requirement to use a cd-rom drive. As long as you have an IDE controller you are good to go. I put a cd-rom in an old 286 and it worked fine. However I'd stay away from those 1x and 2x cd-roms. They usually had their own proprietary controller which wasn't compatable with IDE. You can tell they aren't IDE because they have less pins.

There's a forum specifically for your question.
