Minimum ram for video/media server?

Have some parts laying around and scored a cheap mobo/cpu combo today so I am putting together server for videos and other random stuff. All I need is ram, but with the recent increase in ram prices I don't feel like buying any. Looking on ebay a 256MB stick can be had for under $5 shipped, wondering if this is enough.

I plan to use the server to stream h264 videos to an Xbox 360, perform conversions of videos into formats the 360 can use, print server, and provide access to other files. I think that is about it. It will run XP. The rest of the system will be a G31 board with an e2200.

Can I get away with 256MB? 😀

I'm pretty sure just running firefox will be hell with 256MB.
If you're going to do video converting, you're probably looking at 1GB or a videocard you can offload to, but you'd probably still need 512MB.

You could run 256MB, but the user experience in using the server would be worse than being boiled alive. I'd recommend you get 1GB to save your neurons from an early demise by boredom.

Eh, I thought so. I was just remembering back in the XP days that 256MB was almost the minimum to run it decently. Ended up ordering 1GB.
