Minimum, Optimal, and Maximum DL/UL worth paying for.

So I'm trying to figure out the Minimum, Optimal, and Maximum DL/UL worth paying for if I'm going to play games like World of Warcraft and other online games. Could someone post their opinion on the:

1) Minimum
2) Optimal
3) Maximum

DL/UL speeds. While I could imagine 4 MB DL being really nice, if I won't notice a difference in gaming between the 4MB and say 700K, I'm not about to pay for the difference.

A couple other factors, right now I'm looking into DSL and Cable Internet. I qualify for the DSL that does not need a phone line so for once they actually compete in price against the Cable Internet. I live in a college town so there are many people that could possibly be utilizing the Cable Internet, which comes into play I"m sure. But the Cable Internet is claiming to offer 4MB DL, but the price is pretty steep.

Thanks for any help!

as far as online gaming i think its the amount of packets that kill routers rather than bandwidth. so you should be fine with 768K as long as your router can handle all the packets.

how would I be able to determine how my router responds to the packets? Right now I've got the generic Verizon router that they give you.

How much of a difference would there be between 254k and 768k?

You want at least 512Kbit of upload. Anything less is just too miserable when it comes to games, sending email, P2P, etc. 768Kbit or 1Mbit is even better.

As for download, 30Mbit FiOS is the bees knees, but anything over 5Mbit is pretty sweet.

good to know! here are the packages in my area:

Verizon: $35/month gets me 768 Kbps down 128 Kbps up (including the cost of having a phone line taxes etc..., I wouldn't have the phone if I don't have verizon)

Adelphia: $24/month gets me 256Kb down 256Kb up
Adelphia 2: $45/month gets me 4Mb down and like 700 something up

Seems like the $24 package from Adelphia would not be quite enough speed for online gaming. I wish Adephia had a middle option.

If you guys had to pick which would you select?
