Minimum installed ram to run win7

A family member has a computer with RDRAM. I'm unsure whether 256mb or 512mb are installed. Both amounts are below the stated system requirements microsoft has issued. Is it possible to install win7 nonetheless? Would it be adequately usable?

I wouldn't try it with less then 1 GB. Why are you upgrading to Windows 7 on a machine that old anyway?

Give it a try, and report back. I wouldn't even try with 256mb, but 512mb could be interesting. If it has USB2 ports, ReadyBoost will help performance.
