5gal of water per person
canned food
toilet paper
radio (AA batteries)
flashlight (AA batteries)
spare AA batteries
Leatherman Wave (or Surge) multitool

gun:
- if single, then 9mm w/2 fully loaded spare clips (15shot), and a spare box of ammo
- if family, then AR-15, 9mm, and a revolver (for wife). Wish there was an assault rifle, automatic handgun, and revolver that used the same bullets.

Lvl II or IIIA body armor
basic first aid kit

What's your list? (and remember, minimal)

edit:
duct tape
MRE instead of canned food?
cd radio
fire starter kit? (how about a bic lighter or $1 mini-torch at dollar store?)
hiking water purifier and a strainer and iodine pills. Add a poncho or something similar to catch rainwater (instead of 5gal water)

You're the kind of person I'll be shooting first, because I don't know if you're gonna use that AR-15 to kill ME and take my supplies.

CB radio?
definitely backups of important documents. if the city collapses around you, at least keep enough of your records to rebuild after the mayhem passes you by.

Katrina wasn't EOW. TEOTWAWKI is when the laser lizards from mars land.

Walking around with an AR15 is a sure fire way to get shot and robbed.

If you really wanted to use the same ammo in all weapons, you could use an AR15 in 9mm, better the Olympic carbine that uses Glock mags. Then a Glock 17, and a 9mm revolver. Another would be a Kel-Tec Sub2000 that takes Glock mags and then have a Glock pistol and 9mm revolver.

Where do you get 15 shot clips for your 9mm? I have looked, but all I can find are 15rd magazines.

I have a SHTF set up ready to go if such a thing were to happen. I have a camelback BFM pack loaded with 6 MRE's (taken out of their wrapper and stripped down to save on space), 8 AR mags, 6 33rd Glock 19 mags, Glock 19 loaded with 15 rounder, six 20rd m1a mags, Gerber LFM II knife, couple of bottles of water, 2 CS tear gas grenades, 4 smoke grenades, 10 green chem lights, 12 pack of surefire 123a batteries, and my GPS.

On top of grabbing that pack, I would also grab this box, an AR15, and my M1a (all ready to go in soft cases, the ar soft case has 10 extra mags, and the m1a soft case has 6 extra mags, not counting the mags loaded in the rifles).

I figure I will have time to grab all of that, since I keep it ready to go pretty much. My family has a cabin up in the mountains I would head to if the SHTF for real, lots of food up there, more ammo, water, and you can see for miles.

In additional consider...

Quick setup 60mm field mortar (check incoming.com for frequent sales), any belt fed light machine gun (MG4 or M249, both are nice) for strafing the front lawn (gangs may try to rush your pad - come get some), box of M67 frags for those shock and awe situations, and a brace of claymores for those sneaky f*#kers.

A bottle of 12 year old scotch, a bunch of flares and random wires taped around the chest, and a lampshade for a hat. You could go anywhere you want. No one messes with a drunken "suicide bomber". :p

Two things.

1. JEDI's home address on a piece of paper
2. Hot chick to distract him while I steal his stuff

5 gal of water per person??? That's heavy. Better to go with good hiking water purifier and a strainer and iodine pills. Add a poncho or something similar to catch rainwater, and you'll be better off for far longer.

Internet...can't live without it.

Seriously though, define "short term" better. To some that may mean a few days and to other it may mean a few weeks which makes a big difference.

This thread reminds me of an old Radio Yerevan joke, for their supposedly famous Q&A program:

Q: What do we do in case of nuclear war?
A: In case of nuclear war, please drape yourself in a white sheet and walk quietly towards the nearest cemetery.
Q: Why "quietly"?
A: In order to avoid panic!
