MiniDV: Well worth it?

I am planning to invest in a camcorder (The 8mm Sony Handycam got tired) and wanted to know if MiniDV is as good as the companies say it is. Anyone have any complaints or raves for these machines? Any recommended MiniDV camcorders? What about Sony's Digital8; does it stand up to MiniDV well?
 
minidv is all that. compact, and digital of course. Just rip to your firewire card into realmedia or whatever codec you have and voila.

 
Digital8 is essentially the same as MiniDV except the video data is stored on a different type of tape.
