I was thinking about getting a MiniDV for part of my Christmas present...
I've been looking at some of the Sharp Viewfinders or perhaps a Canon ZR40?
I have a fairly decent digital Camera (Canon S330) so not worried about the MiniDV doing pictures of any kind...

Any ideas? Do I have any good choices?

The sharp VL-AX1U looks pretty amazing for the price. There's a $50 coupon every now and then, bringing it to $449.

no reviews on it yet, though. And I'm sure you noticed Sharp didn't get very positive reviews in the past. But at half the price of comparable 1.3MP camcorders it may be a good deal.

Did you see this comparo, btw?

Have you looked at the Canon ZR20, ZR40, or ZR45 (although this one is pushing yer price range)? MP numbers don't mean very much for camcorders 'cause the res is locked at 720*480 for MiniDV. The physical size of the CCD, and the number of CCDs is what's important (consumer cameras will only have 1 CCD while pro/semi-pro cameras will have 3). I'd look at Canon, Sony, or JVC for a good camera.
