MiniDisplayPort to Whatever adapters now available for less than $20

Hopefully someone will review these things and make sure they're kosher. DisplayPort isn't electrically compatible with DVI, so the adapters are an active converter.

Eh?

When I plugged in my mini-display-port-to-VGA adapter, I had to get a firmware update... for the adapter... It was really confusing. Not that the firmware update was confusing, but the fact that a little adapter/cable thing even has a firmware confuses me.

Oh and I'm talking about the official Apple product.

These aren't for adapting a DVI port output (from a PC's video card), to allow using the new Mac 24" LCD monitor (on a Windows machine)?

I don't know why Apple is insisting on pushing DisplayPort other than it being royalty free. Most displays use HDMI. Sure, it might push a few more Cinema Displays but how many people are going to look at it and say "screw them" if they have to buy a new monitor or expensive adaptors.

Thank god Monoprice ships internationally. I might pick up one of those DVI adaptors so I can hook my Macbook up to my 19'' monitor and my TV.

Eh?
What is there to get? DisplayPort uses a different signaling method (a patent-free one) than TDMS as used in DVI. As such these aren't simple passive converters that put the right pins in the right position, but rather an active converter with a chip in it buffering input and sending out an appropriate output signal. It's entirely possible that the hardware they're using is crap.

Monoprice is usually a known quantity, so I wouldn't worry.

Can anyone comment on these?
Do they work ok?

I'm new to Apple, just bought a 13" MBP, and wondering about alternatives to spending $30 for an adapter at the Apple store.

Is there anything available at b&m stores or do I need to order one?

I bought a Monoprice MDP-DVI adapter a few months ago. It works fine, but it does not support HDCP, which is annoying.

i got a MDP-HDMI and on my mbp, it outputs perfectly at 1920x1080p to my tv. 🙂 no audio though, but thats okay because i use optical out. 🙂

HDMI has no analog signal. By dropping DVI and moving to DisplayPort, they were able to make the mini-port smaller, and still maintain both Analog and Digital output. Plus the other benefits of DisplayPort over HDMI (chaining and more bandwidth for example)

I bought the 15" Unibody when it first came out. I bought the VGA adapter then since I really needed it. But I did go through monoprice for the HDMI adapter. It's awesome.

Whoaaaaaaa! Does that do 5.1? That could be the best solution for aftermarket 5.1 for Macs yet! (assuming we can find a video card with DisplayPort that works on a Hackintosh!) 😀

We'll find out! I filled out the "Notify Me" form on Monoprice so I can order one of these things when it's ready to ship.

Newegg lists 8 video cards with Display Port. This one:

is currently $33 after rebate.

Except those are full DisplayPort, Apple is using MiniDisplayPort and that is what those adapters are for. I was able to find an adapter for going from mDP to DP, but not the other way unfortunately.

Kaido said DP in his post, so I just assumed not Mini-DP. I wonder why there aren't any DP to mDP adapters. I think that IS just a physical resize of the connector.
