MiniDisc recorder can't edit TOC?

I just pulled out my Sharp 702 MiniDisc recorder, and was going to record a few things with a mic. So, I did a quick test record, and turned the unit off. When powering off, it finalized the TOC if it has changed. Well, my recorder is not properly editing the TOC - when I try to play the disc, it says "UTOC ERROR" and I can't do anything at all except format the disc. If I format the disc, it does successfully modify the TOC to reflect a blank disc. Only when I try to record something will it not write the TOC. Seems to record and pick up the mic just fine, it just can't finalize the TOC. Is my recorder screwed, or just dirty? If so, how do I clean it?
